Employment Type: Full time Shift: Day Shift Description: POSITION PURPOSE Candidate will be formally trained, board Certified Genetics Counselor (CGC) with a specific interest in adult cancer syndromes and hereditary/familial cancer screening and counseling. Engages in clinical, educational, and research areas of genetics counseling and screening. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES Clinical Evaluate patients and families considered at risk for familial cancers, including but not limited to: Hereditary breast/ovarian cancers. Colorectal cancer syndromes (HNPCC, FAP, MYH1, Peutz-Jeugher). Familial melanoma. Hereditary pancreatic cancer. Hereditary endocrine disorders (MEN1/MEN Participation/screening in Cancer Care Specialty Center. Education Formal education efforts in regard to educating healthcare providers on identifying at-risk families will be directed by, but not limited to: Health Care System physicians. Multidisciplinary staff in the Cancer program. Community outreach efforts/speaking engagements. Research and National Community Cancer Center Program Participate in research efforts directed at improving screening rates of at-risk families. Assist in the development and selection of genetic modifiers (K-ras, MSI) that will need to be adopted for selective treatment modification of newly diagnosed or metastatic cancer patients. REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE Master’s degree in Genetic Counseling from a program accredited by the American Board of Genetic Counseling. One to three years experience in outpatient cancer genetics counseling preferred. ABGC Board certification as a Certified Genetics Counselor (CGC) by the American Board Genetic Counseling (AMGC) or the American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG). Licensed as a Genetic Counselor in the State of Michigan. REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES To provide genetic counseling and cancer risk assessment to persons or families with a history of cancer or known risk factors for cancer. Works with the appropriate physician in supporting consultation requests from persons or families with a history of certain cancers or known cancer risk factors or from other cancer health care professionals. Obtains and interprets information from multiple sources to identify counseling needs and provide the care needed.
