Job Description:

The Department of Chemistry at Trinity University invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor in Chemistry beginning August 2026. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in chemistry (or related field) and postdoctoral research experience (or equivalent). Teaching responsibilities will include general chemistry, lower division laboratory courses, upper division courses in their subdiscipline and courses in the University curriculum. This position carries the expectation of developing a sustainable research program involving undergraduate students in any field of experimental chemistry. Interdisciplinary research is welcome. This research program will directly support the goal of experiential learning that is fundamental to the mission of the University. The successful applicants will have a demonstrated desire to be a teacher-scholar. They will show a strong potential to contribute to teaching, research and evidence that they will positively engage with the university and department.

Biochemistry

BACKGROUND

Trinity University is a secular, independent, private institution, founded in 1869. Trinity offers high-quality science, liberal arts, and pre-professional programs as represented by the four schools (STEM, Arts & Humanities, Social Science and Civic Engagement, and Business) to approximately 2,500 undergraduate students from the U.S. and more than 45 countries. The Department of Chemistry is one of eight departments in the D. R. Semmes School of Science that was recently endowed with a gift of $26 million that in part supports student research and faculty development. The D. R. Semmes School of Science is housed in the Center for the Sciences and Innovation, an innovative and collaborative hub for interdisciplinary research and teaching.

The Department of Chemistry serves a wide range of chemistry-related majors, other STEM majors and pre-health professional students. We are committed to a teacher-scholar model with high quality education and active research programs involving undergraduate students. Tenured and tenure-track faculty in The Department of Chemistry have been highly successful in attracting external funding for research, and have research programs with (inter)national visibility. We possess state-of-the art laboratory facilities and instrumentation, and have close ties/user agreements with local universities and research institutions for equipment not currently housed in the department. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Open:

  • Teaching: Successful candidates will be expected to effectively teach 5 lecture and/or laboratory courses per year. These courses include disciplinary upper- and lower-division courses, and other courses related to broader University initiatives. The successful candidate will demonstrate an eagerness to teach in and contribute to the general chemistry curriculum.

  • Research: Successful candidates will be expected to develop a sustainable research program involving undergraduate students in any field of experimental chemistry. Interdisciplinary research is welcome.

  • Service: Successful candidates will be expected to advise departmental majors, and engage in department, University and professional service activities.

Biochemistry:

  • Teaching: Successful candidates will be expected to effectively teach 5 lecture and/or laboratory courses per year. These courses include biochemistry lectures and laboratory, general chemistry, other (bio)chemistry courses relevant to the candidates subdiscipline, and other courses related to broader University initiatives.

  • Research: Successful candidates will be expected to develop a sustainable research program involving undergraduate students in any field of biochemistry/chemical biology. Interdisciplinary research is welcome.

  • Service: Successful candidates will be expected to advise departmental majors, and engage in department, University and professional service activities.

APPOINTMENT DETAILS

This position will be a 9-month appointment (9 or 12 month disbursement) starting August 2026, with a standard pre-tenure probationary period.

EDUCATION

Required: Ph.D. in Chemistry/Biochemistry (or related field)

EXPERIENCE

Required: Postdoctoral research experience (or equivalent experience)

  • Teaching Philosophy Statement (1 - 3 pages): Describe your motivation, experience, and approaches to teaching at a primarily undergraduate institution like Trinity University. In your teaching statement please describe strategies and approaches you will employ to create an inclusive and welcoming teaching environment such that the material you present would be accessible to students from a wide range of backgrounds and preparations. The incorporation of examples from your prior teaching experiences and examples specific to how you would approach teaching in your subdiscipline of (bio)chemistry is highly encouraged.

  • Anonymized Statement of Future Research Plans (3 - 5 pages not including references; figures strongly encouraged in the 3 - 5 page narrative): Describe your goals and vision for a sustainable research program with undergraduates. Please include at least one example of a summer undergraduate research project.

  • Anonymized Statement of Past Research Accomplishments (1 - 2 pages): Describe your scientific accomplishments to date. Please include a list of published, accepted, and submitted articles with only the article titles, number of authors, your place in the author list (e.g., 3rd of 7 authors), and your contributions to the study.
