As a Medical Technologist You Will
- Manage infectious specimens, hazardous chemicals, and potentially dangerous instruments in accordance with hospital and departmental policies in order to maintain a safe working environment.
- Perform a variety of highly complex, technically demanding clinical assays on infectious specimens.
- Interpret the validity of assay results using professional judgement based on knowledge of physiological systems and principles of instrumentation and quality assurance.
- Document and communicate results of these analyses, facilitating appropriate diagnosis and treatment of patients.
- Maintain thorough knowledge of all assays, reagent systems, and instrumentation in order to assist technologists when problems occur.
- Continuously strengthen knowledge of laboratory principles and techniques through participation in continuing education activities.
- Communicate and interpret laboratory results, procedures, and policies to physicians and health care providers.
- Evaluate recent technological advances and new procedures for possible laboratory implementation.
- Provide interpretation of results and parameters when necessary.
- Oversee and maintain a continuous workflow in the laboratory.
- Assign work to laboratory staff and prepares the work schedule.
- Conduct continuing education programs. Instructs and trains staff and Medical Technology students.
- Demonstrate financial accountability through accurate documentation of workload and efficient use of reagents and supplies.
- Baccalaureate degree or above in biological science, chemical science, or laboratory science (medical technology) preferred. MT (ASCP) certification preferred
- A minimum of 5 years of experience in an acute care hospital laboratory setting, at least 2 of which are specific to Microbiology
- Prior laboratory information system, Microsoft (MS) Windows, MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint and MS Outlook experience necessary.
- Performance, evaluation, and supervision of routine and specialized analytical procedures require a very high level of skill and independent judgment.
- Thorough understanding of all routine, new and special procedures and theory for application and development of procedures to the laboratory.
