Description:

Summary

Pharmacy Residents are fully licensed Pharmacists and practice in areas appropriate for Pharmacists. The primary task of the Resident is completion of the ASHP Residency Learning System requirements for the Pharmacy Practice Residency in the 12-month period of their residency. The focus of this position is on clinical education and development versus traditional pharmacist services in support of production or provision of pharmacy services to support patient care. Residents do not work or fill in as Cashiers or Pharmacy

Qualifications

Education

Minimum: PharmD Degree in Pharmacy from an accredited college of pharmacy.

Credentials/Licensure

Minimum: Valid Registered Pharmacist license, or eligible to take NABPLEX Board Exam within 90 days of start. Pharmacist Controlled substance license issued by the Michigan State Board of Pharmacy within 90 days of start. BCLS and ACLS certifications must be obtained within 60 days of hire.

Related Experience

Minimum: Must operate intravenous admixture solution pump.

Minimum:

Computer Competency

Familiarity with standard desktop and windows-based computer system, including email, e-learning, intranet and computer navigation. Ability to use other software required to perform essential functions.

Physical/Mental

Minimum: Some pushing and pulling of carts is required along with bending, stooping (10% of time), considerable standing and walking (50% of time) and occasional lifting, usually no more than twenty pounds.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Substantial time in relatively independent study with reading, composition, and computer work. Strict aseptic technique must be followed in preparation of intravenous admixtures and chemotherapeutic agents, and precautions must be taken against personal risk of contamination and exposure to infections during cardiac arrest team service.

Essential Functions

▪ Screens, interprets, modifies, verifies and enters into computer system physicians' orders and seeks clarification when necessary.

▪ Completes all aspects of the ASHP RLS during the 12 months of the Mercy Health Saint Mary’s Pharmacy Practice Residency.

▪ Completes an agreed upon major project during the Residency.

▪ Fulfills agreed upon commitment to pharmacist staffing.

▪ Submits a proposal and presents at the Great Lakes Residency Conference.

▪ Compounds various medicinal preparations, intravenous admixtures, irrigation solutions, and chemotherapeutic agents.

▪ Checks work performed by other staff pharmacists, externs, and technicians, particularly patient medication drawers, first dose medication envelopes, refill supplies, intravenous admixtures, chemotherapeutic agents, and prepackaged medication supplies.

▪ Functions in the pharmacokinetics dosing service program, making dose and dosing regimen recommendations to physicians in the initial and continually monitored therapies of the patients included in this service.

▪ Responds to questions and problems raised by other health team members, especially physicians and nurses.

▪ Monitors patients' therapies with particular attention to medication allergies, patient’s age, drug interactions, laboratory data, and appropriateness of medications prescribed.

▪ Instructs other pharmacists, nurses, physicians, residents, pharmacy externs, and technician interns regarding programs and policy and procedure changes.

▪ Ensures proper inventory and storage of controlled substances, frozen and refrigerated, and light-sensitive pharmaceuticals.

▪ Fills outpatient prescriptions and inpatient medication drawers and first dose envelopes.

▪ Promotes teamwork by keeping others informed, participating effectively in group decision making, working to accomplish team objectives and projects and by soliciting feedback about one's effectiveness as a team member.

▪ Participate in the training, education, precepting, and evaluation of pharmacy students and/or residents as assigned.

▪ Continually improves processes by seeking ways to reduce or eliminate waste.

▪ Assists in process improvement and activities to eliminate redundant activity and reduce costs.

▪ Performs other related duties as assigned.
