JOB DESCRIPTION

Neurosurgical nurses work in an inpatient hospital setting, including the operating room. Neurosurgical nurses provide pre-and post-operative care, monitor a patient's neurological status, and may help with surgical procedures.

Neurosurgical nurses in an ICU setting, also known as Neurological Intensive Care, provides critical care to patients with complex neurological conditions and injuries. They play a vital role in monitoring and evaluating patients who face life-threatening issues such as traumatic brain injuries, seizures, strokes, neurosurgery, and spinal cord injuries. Collaboration with a team of healthcare professionals, including neurologists, neurosurgeons, and other specialists, is a crucial component of their highly demanding and specialized field. They develop comprehensive treatment plans, provide emotional support to the patients and their families, and ensure timely administration of appropriate interventions and medications. In essence, the Neuro ICU Nurse is the backbone of the critical care setting, ensuring optimal patient care and contributing to improved outcomes for patients with serious neurological conditions.

DUTIES

• Room patients and review H&P.
• Alert physician or nurse of any abnormality in vital signs or appearance for further reassessment.
• Assist surgeons with patient consultations and pre-operative appointments.
• Document in the medical record complete and accurate summary of care given inclusive of medications administered, procedures performed and appropriate observation.
• Monitoring patient’s conditions and assessing their needs.
• Collaborating with physicians and nurses to devise individualized care plans for patients.
• Administering patient’s medications and providing treatments according to physician’s orders.
• Fostering a supportive and compassionate environment to care for patients and their families.
• Monitoring patient’s conditions and assessing their needs.

• Request pre-operative labs as needed.
• Prepare and review pre-operative packets.
• Perform surgery scheduling, authorizations, and all other related tasks to get a patient ready for surgery.
• Answer patient phone calls and documents in the EMR.
• Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

• National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN) certification
• A valid nursing certificate, ADN, BSN, or MSN degree from an accredited college or university.
• A valid unencumbered RN license for the State of California.
• The appropriate license to work in their state/county.
• ACLS certification.
• BLS certification.
• Must have at least 12 months of relevant consecutive acute care experience in this specialty.
• Must Possess at least 12 months of experience as an RN in an ICU environment. 
• Current vaccinations and health clearance certification.
• Excellent knowledge of aseptic and sterile techniques.
• Must have previous experience with starting IVs.
• High-level interpersonal skills and the ability to connect with patients during stressful experiences.
• Strong organizational abilities and good communication skills
• Fluent in English.

WORK LOCATION

• Mission Viejo, California Area

HOURS OF OPERATION

• Full Time 12-hour Night Shifts Available

COMPENSATION

• $88,000-145,000 Annually
