Termite and Pest Control Trainee – Construction/Mechanical Experience Preferred

Tri-County Termite & Pest Control, Inc. is seeking a dependable, mechanically inclined individual who wants to learn a skilled trade and build a long-term career in pest management. We are a family-owned company that has served New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland since 1986.

No previous pest control experience is required. This is a paid, hands-on training position covering general pest control, termite management, nuisance wildlife, structural exclusion, and specialized heat treatments.

The selected candidate will primarily apprentice alongside our Director of Operations while also riding with other experienced technicians throughout our service area. During the initial training period, this person will assist with physical job preparation and labor, learn to operate specialized equipment, complete required licensing and safety training, and gradually assume more responsibility.

Our goal is to have the successful candidate completing certain assignments independently within approximately three months and capable of managing a full schedule independently within approximately one year. Advancement depends on demonstrated ability, reliability, safety, licensing, and overall performance. As the employee gains experience, there will be opportunities to specialize in one or more areas of pest management.

Compensation

$21.00–$25.00 per hour, based on relevant work experience, mechanical ability, and existing pest control knowledge or licensing.

Commission and incentive opportunities will become available as the employee becomes qualified to perform additional work independently.

Areas of Training

The trainee will receive hands-on instruction in:

  • Residential and commercial pest inspections
  • General pest control and Integrated Pest Management
  • Termite inspections, liquid treatments, and baiting systems
  • Wildlife inspections, trapping, removal, and structural exclusion
  • Bed bug and other specialized structural heat treatments
  • Pesticide safety, label compliance, and application procedures
  • Customer communication and service recommendations
  • Electronic service records, treatment documentation, and material reporting
  • Minor structural exclusion, including caulking, screening, and sealing
  • Safe operation and maintenance of company vehicles and equipment

As experience develops, employees may have opportunities to specialize in termite and wood-destroying insect control, wildlife and exclusion, heat remediation, commercial pest management, or other advanced service areas.

Initial Job Responsibilities

  • Ride along with experienced technicians and assist with inspections and treatments.
  • Prepare work areas, equipment, tools, and materials.
  • Assist with termite trenching, drilling, rodding, liquid treatments, and baiting-system installations.
  • Use hand augers and core drills to install termite baiting stations in soil and hardscape.
  • Assist with wildlife trapping, animal removal, entry-point inspections, and exclusion work.
  • Help prepare structures for heat treatments and assist with equipment setup, temperature monitoring, treatment documentation, breakdown, and cleanup.
  • Assist with general pest control services using chemical and non-chemical methods.
  • Load, unload, clean, and maintain tools, treatment equipment, traps, heaters, fans, and other specialized equipment.
  • Measure treatment areas and record dimensions for proposals and treatment planning.
  • Use a smartphone and tablet to communicate with the office and complete electronic records.
  • Maintain clean and organized vehicles, equipment, and work areas.
  • Follow all company safety procedures, pesticide labels, and applicable regulations.
  • Work occasional weekends when operationally necessary.

Training and Career Progression

During the first several months, the trainee will:

  • Work directly alongside our team leaders and other experienced technicians.
  • Learn pest identification, biology, treatment methods, construction practices, and conducive conditions.
  • Learn to use hammer drills, core drills, spray rigs, hand augers, wildlife equipment, heat-treatment equipment, and other specialized tools.
  • Complete required pesticide and safety training.
  • Work toward applicable licenses and certifications.
  • Begin performing limited independent assignments once properly trained, licensed, and approved by management.

As training progresses, the employee will learn to:

  • Inspect properties and accurately identify pest problems.
  • Select and carry out appropriate treatment or exclusion plans.
  • Explain findings and recommendations clearly to customers.
  • Complete accurate service, material, time, and treatment records.
  • Manage equipment, materials, scheduling, and customer communication independently.
  • Handle a full daily schedule using a company vehicle.

Qualifications

  • No previous pest control experience is required.
  • Construction, landscaping, waterproofing, maintenance, mechanical, animal-control, or other hands-on field experience is helpful.
  • Ability and willingness to learn the safe use of hand tools, power tools, drills, spray equipment, traps, and specialized treatment equipment.
  • Dependable attendance and punctuality.
  • Strong attention to detail and willingness to maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to follow instructions, accept feedback, and gradually work more independently.
  • Professional appearance and ability to communicate clearly with customers and coworkers.
  • Ability to complete written and electronic records in English.
  • Valid driver’s license and a driving record that meets company standards.
  • Ability to pass required pre-employment screening.
  • Willingness to complete required training and obtain applicable licenses and certifications.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work in basements, crawlspaces, attics, and other confined or difficult-to-access areas.
  • Ability to kneel, bend, crawl, climb, dig, and carry the tools and equipment required for the work.
  • Ability to walk moderate distances and work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to perform physical labor for extended periods.
  • Ability to work around insects, rodents, nuisance wildlife, odors, dust, and damaged or unsanitary areas.
  • Ability to safely use a respirator when required, following medical clearance and fit testing.
