Summary of Position
The Water Treatment Plant Operator is responsible for the operations of the water plants in order to ensure that residents have potable water by federal, state, and municipal regulatory policies and standards.
With minimum supervision, work alone or with other members of the treatment crew in performing required daily tasks. Interfaces with other Utility Department personnel, City administrators, other City departments, and the general public.
Organizational Relationships
Reports to the Supervisor of Water Operations
Directs: Provide training to utility technicians and trainees, if any.
Other: Has contact with other employees, consultants, contractors, suppliers, and the general public.
Essential Duties, Skills, Knowledge & Responsibilities
- Assists in preparing and maintaining plant records, both operational and regulatory.
- Performs the required operational laboratory tests, daily reads on various meters, and daily checks of the Water Treatment Plant. Performs control room duties. Monitors the water distribution and pump systems using a computerized SCADA system.
- Maintains water treatment plant facilities and grounds.
- Receives chemical shipments and maintains an inventory of treatment chemicals. Other duties assigned. Must be able to lift at least 50lbs.
- Knowledge of basic computer skills, State and Federal regulations governing the treatment of surface water.
- Ability to work with minimum direct supervision, to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Ability to read meters, gauges, and online instruments.
- Must be available for on-call and respond to emergencies after the probationary period.
Acceptable Experience and Training
High School Diploma or equivalent, with a minimum of 2 years' experience in operating and maintaining a water treatment plant.
Or any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Certificates and Licenses Required
Valid Texas Driver’s License
Class C Surface Water Certification from the TCEQ
