$68,493.00

Class/Calendar:

D62, 12 months

Performance Pay:

Available annually

New Hire Experience:

1% of the base hourly rate granted for each year of verified like experience (within ten years) beyond the requirement, up to a ten-year maximum

New Hire Education:

1% of the base hourly rate awarded for an AA or higher degree if not required for the position

 

Job Summary:

 

To supervise drivers and transportation personnel at an assigned transportation satellite, yard, or operational location. This position supports safe, reliable, and compliant pupil transportation by assisting with dispatch, route coverage, incident response, employee supervision, parent and school communication, safety programs, training, documentation, and continuous improvement efforts.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Hires, evaluates, and oversees the performance of assigned staff members
  • Supervise drivers and district personnel at assigned satellite
  • Assist in the development and implementation of safety and training programs.
  • Communicate with school administrators, staff, parents, and the general public regarding pupil transportation
  • Assist in the resolution of student bus discipline problems
  • Maintain written documentation of events, accidents, complaints, and general inquiries
  • Stays current on pupil transportation laws, safety standards, operational trends, training practices and best practices.
  • Dispatch personnel and vehicles.
  • Present and/or attend training programs relative to school bus safety as requested
  • Use several software and internet-based systems.
  • Prepare and keep records and files (i.e., employee assignments, payroll information) as required.
  • Maintain current information about district roads and assist in assessing road conditions.
  • Operates a school bus, activity bus, or District vehicle as needed to provide route, field trip, athletic trip, emergency, or absence coverage.  
  • Collaborate with department and school leaders, supervisors, and staff to align processes and procedures, while actively seeking their input; lead or participate in joint committees and working groups.
  • Focus on continuous improvement by analyzing data, assessing systems and timelines, and recommending adjustments to enhance procedures and strategies.
  • Reviews recurring service issues, route delays, complaints, staffing concerns, safety trends, and system data to identify root causes and recommend corrective actions.  
  • Identify opportunities to optimize the use of various information systems, and liaise with system representatives to stay informed on updates and explore potential improvements.
  • Work with administration and staff to identify ways to improve efficiency and effectiveness in assigned areas and related departmental functions.
  • Develop and execute both short- and long-term goals for assigned responsibilities
  • Stay informed on federal and state laws and best practices relevant to the assigned area through ongoing research.
  • Maintains confidentiality of student, employee, operational, and District records in accordance with applicable laws, policies, and procedures.  
  • Handles student and employee information with confidentiality and professional judgment.  
  • May be required to respond to urgent transportation matters, weather-related events, route disruptions, vehicle issues, school emergencies, or after-hours/weekend operational needs.  
  • Assist with other assigned duties as appropriate to the area of assignment and Mesa Public Schools 

Required Qualifications: 

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Arizona Class B CDL with Passenger and School Bus endorsements.
  • Arizona school bus driver certification or ability to obtain/maintain.
  • Valid fingerprint clearance card or ability to obtain/maintain.
  • Acceptable driving record.
  • Experience in pupil transportation, school bus safety, routing, dispatch, or transportation operations.
  • Minimum five years of dispatch or transportation operations experience. 

Preferred Qualifications:    

  • Experience with special needs transportation. Experience using routing, GPS, dispatch, timekeeping, and student information systems.
  • Experience conducting accident/incident reviews, driver coaching, and safety training.

  • Ability to handle transportation problems, concerns and complaints with tact and diplomacy
  • Ability to effectively communicate (verbal and written) with students, parents, coworkers, general public and district personnel at all levels
  • Knowledge of and ability to enforce district policies, procedures and applicable state regulations
  • Ability to organize, prioritize and meet deadlines while working under pressure and with frequent interruptions
  • Ability to read and to understand routes, maps and schedules; knowledge of street and school locations within the district
  • Willingness to be reassigned to any satellite location for the hours needed (weekend, emergency, etc) as dictated by the needs of the district
  • Ability to effectively use two-way radio and timekeeping, routing and computer programs
  • Ability to provide individual and group instruction and/or refresher training in safety and service topics 

Work Environment & Physical Requirements: 

  • Office setting within a transportation facility or satellite office
  • Frequent visits to bus depots, parking lots, and maintenance areas
  • Exposure to noise from buses, maintenance equipment, and traffic
  • Interaction with bus drivers, mechanics, school administrators, and parents
  • Ability to stand, walk, and move frequently throughout bus yards and school campuses
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull transportation-related equipment and supplies, typically up to 50 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
