The State of New Hampshire, Department of Transportation, Bureau of Mechanical Services, has a full-time vacancy for a Maintenance Assistant.
SUMMARY:
To assist building trades and perform a wide range of skilled maintenance and repair work on buildings and grounds, including utilities, machinery, vehicles and equipment to assure continuous functionality.
YOUR EXPERIENCE COUNTS: Each additional year of approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work experience and/or each additional year of approved work experience may be substituted for one year of required formal education.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Experience: High school diploma or equivalent credential
License/Certification: Valid driver’s license
Other Requirements:
1. Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) must meet the minimum standards as established by the Department of Transportation.
2. Must be in good physical condition with normal strength and agility and able to lift/carry up to 50 pounds on an intermittent basis.
3. Must be willing to work flexible work schedule to keep state agency buildings clear of snow or to change hours during any special emergency period.
4. Must provide own standard assortment of general maintenance hand tools.
5. Must pass a Spirometry Test.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Experience in general maintenance and repair work associated with carpentry, electricity, painting, plumbing, masonry, sheet metal, welding, auto repair, excavation and/or site work, landscaping, or related trade experience. Completion of a 2-year vocational program in Automotive Technology, Construction Trades, or Welding Technology is preferred. Knowledge of the methods and tools used in maintenance and repair work. Working knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions. Knowledge of the principles of operation of motor equipment sufficient to detect defective operation and to make minor repairs. Knowledge of the care and safe operation of trucks and light-motor driven equipment. Working knowledge of state motor vehicle laws. Knowledge of grounds-keeping and simple practices relating to the care of flowers, lawns, trees and shrubs. Ability to use the tools and equipment of the trades. Ability to maintain and make ordinary repairs to machinery and equipment.

The work of an employee in trainee status in this position shall be overseen by a fully qualified individual. An employee in trainee status shall meet the minimum qualifications within the period of time specified on the SJD, not to exceed one year of being hired into this position.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assists building trades with interior building maintenance, including carpentry, electrical, plumbing, painting and mechanical system maintenance and provides general care and maintenance of the interior and exterior of state buildings. Repairs, services and maintains industrial heating systems as required to provide continuous service.
Operates and maintains lawn and snow removal equipment, powered brooms, loaders, and backhoes, and other grounds equipment; makes field repairs on such equipment. Cuts and trims grass and hedges, plants and maintains gardens and shrubs, and cuts and clears brush as assigned.
Installs and moves furniture, partitions, equipment, and cabling and constructs and finishes from plans custom storage cabinets, tables and other office type furniture to minimize purchase of similar commercially manufactured items.
Repairs small equipment and checks vehicles to observe the need for preventive maintenance and upkeep of the equipment and vehicles.
Performs skilled and semi-skilled tasks, as required to augment journey level trades staff including Carpenters, Auto body Technicians, Welders, and Mechanics.
Cross trains and assists in other sections within the Bureau including the auto body, welding/fabrication, light & heavy fleet and machine shops.
Drives vehicles to deliver and pick up supplies, move equipment, and remove debris.
Operates, repairs, adjusts, sets-up and maintains shop machinery such as automotive lifts, parts washers, floor jacks, pipe threader, tire machines, sanders, wood planers and air compressors to assure good operating condition and long life.
Oversees employees and contracted staff doing related maintenance work, including training, assigning duties, and checking work, as assigned.
