The duties that the incumbent of the vacancy will be expected to perform. Duties Description The candidate will work under the direction of a Professional Geologist.Duties may include, but are not limited to: • Performing geotechnical, geological, and geophysical investigations to gain information on highway alignments, building and other structural sites, materials sources, groundwater evaluations, and other similar projects.• Responding to reported rockfalls at rock slope sites, evaluating stability of rock slopes and providing remediation recommendations.• Evaluating geologic soundness of stockpiled stone fill materials.• Serving as a technical advisor on construction projects during the excavations for both shallow and deep structure foundations.• Using computer-related techniques on engineering and geologic projects.• Traveling frequently; including overnight trips to sites statewide, will be required.• Performing other duties, as required.Responsibilities may include serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations.

Minimum Qualifications This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS).* To be considered for permanent appointment through NY HELPS, or 55 b/c, candidates must be reachable from the appropriate Civil Service eligible list or be eligible for reassignment or transfer in accordance with Civil Service Law.Minimum qualifications-Geologist Trainee: A bachelor's degree or higher in earth science, engineering geology, environmental geology, environmental geosciences, geochemistry, geological engineering, geology, geological science, geophysics, or hydrogeology.Assistant Geologist: Either 1: Proof of passing the National Association of State Boards of Geology (ASBOG) Fundamentals of Geology (FG) examination AND a bachelor's degree or higher in earth science, engineering geology, environmental geology, environmental geosciences, geochemistry, geological engineering, geology, geological science, geophysics, or hydrogeology;Or 2: Proof of passing the National Association of State Boards of Geology (ASBOG) Fundamentals of Geology (FG) Examination AND one year of experience in economic geology, hydrogeology, environmental geology or engineering geology;3: A professional geologist licensure with current registration.NOTE: In accordance with Chapter 475 of the Laws of 2014, all Professional Geologists in New York State must obtain licensure under Title VIII of the Education Law. Based on this, if appointed to this position you will be required to pass the National Association of State Boards of Geology (ASBOG) Fundamentals of Geology (FG) examination within two years of your permanent appointment date.
