Position Overview:
SGL is seeking an experienced Senior Domestic Freight Operations & LTL Specialist to manage complex domestic transportation and freight forwarding operations from shipment initiation through final delivery. This role requires a hands-on logistics professional with strong operational expertise in domestic freight forwarding, LTL/FTL coordination, domestic air freight, carrier management, shipment problem resolution, and transportation compliance.
Candidates must have a minimum of 5 years of recent domestic freight forwarding, transportation operations, or 3PL experience. This position requires the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment with minimal training.
Job Responsibilities
- Manage the complete lifecycle of domestic shipments, including shipment booking, order processing, dispatch coordination, tracking, tracing, and final delivery.
- Coordinate multimodal domestic transportation operations, including LTL, FTL, domestic air freight, expedited shipments, and Alaska/Hawaii freight movements.
- Work directly with carriers, trucking companies, airlines, warehouses, dispatch teams, vendors, and third-party logistics providers (3PLs) to ensure timely and accurate freight movement.
- Prepare, review, and maintain transportation documentation including MAWBs, HAWBs, Bills of Lading (BOLs), transfer orders, manifests, and shipment records.
- Monitor shipment activity and proactively manage delays, service disruptions, re-routes, claims, and delivery exceptions.
- Serve as the primary escalation point for shipment issues, customer concerns, and carrier service failures.
- Investigate and resolve shipment complaints and freight claims while ensuring timely follow-up and resolution.
- Monitor carrier performance and maintain strong working relationships with transportation providers and operational partners.
- Utilize ERP, TMS, or freight management systems to manage shipment activity, operational reporting, and inventory visibility.
- Support customer service teams with shipment updates, order status requests, special delivery requirements, and time-critical freight coordination.
- Ensure compliance with DOT, TSA, FAA, and 49 CFR Dangerous Goods (DG) regulations.
- Manage bonded cargo shipments and coordinate bonded warehouse processes when required.
- Identify operational inefficiencies and support continuous improvement initiatives to improve service reliability, transportation efficiency, and overall logistics performance.
- Maintain accurate operational records while ensuring on-time delivery performance and customer satisfaction.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years of recent experience in domestic freight forwarding, transportation operations, logistics coordination, or 3PL environments.
- Strong knowledge of domestic air freight, LTL, FTL, expedited freight, and multimodal transportation operations.
- Experience handling freight forwarding documentation including MAWB, HAWB, Bills of Lading, manifests, and shipping paperwork.
- Experience coordinating with multiple carriers, warehouses, dispatch teams, and logistics providers.
- Hands-on experience managing shipment escalations, claims resolution, and exception management.
- Working knowledge of DOT, TSA, FAA, and 49 CFR Dangerous Goods (DG) compliance regulations preferred.
- Experience handling bonded freight, bonded cargo, or customs-bonded shipment processes preferred.
- Experience using ERP systems, transportation management systems (TMS), or freight forwarding platforms.
- Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Experience supporting time-sensitive, high-value, or expedited shipments.
- Knowledge of carrier routing, shipment recovery processes, and transportation operations best practices.
- Ability to independently manage high-volume transportation operations with minimal supervision.
