Staff Psychologist – US Army Recruiting Division (USARD) Psychology Services (multiple positions available)
Location of Work:
Primary work is performed remotely from the psychologist’s residence or personal business office within the United States, with required travel to Fort Knox, KY and to brigade and battalion headquarters and recruiting locations across CONUS and OCONUS for training, assessment, and consultation events.
Work Schedule:
Standard 40‑hour workweek, Monday through Friday, generally between 7:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.; irregular hours, evenings, and weekends may be required to support crisis intervention, field training events, and Annual Training Conferences.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide internal behavioral health and operational psychology support to commanders and Soldiers to enhance performance, resilience, and psychological health across USARD.
- Deliver consultation and executive coaching to leaders on issues such as organizational culture, risk, stress, communication, and team effectiveness, and advise on appropriate leader actions.
- Support the Adaptive Leader Program, Assessment and Selection Program, and Brigade Psychologists Program through psychological assessment, interview, scoring, interpretation, and structured feedback.
- Conduct risk assessments, review relevant behavioral health information, and coordinate with Military Treatment Facilities and other resources to assist in managing high‑risk Soldiers and serious incidents.
- Develop and deliver resilience, mental toughness, suicide prevention, and performance‑enhancement training to units in person and virtually, including sustainment and annual training events.
- Participate in the design, administration, scoring, and interpretation of psychological tests and surveys (e.g., personality, cognitive, leadership style, TAIS and similar tools) and integrate results into leader development and selection decisions.
- Prepare timely documentation, briefings, after‑action reviews, and trend analyses for the Office of the Command Psychologist (OCP), including recommendations to improve policies, programs, and training.
- Collaborate with other behavioral health professionals, staff officers, and contractor personnel, maintaining effective working relationships with brigade and battalion leadership teams.
Qualifications and Certifications
- Doctoral degree (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) in clinical or counseling psychology from an American Psychological Association (APA)–accredited graduate program.
- Completion of an APA‑accredited internship with at least one year of supervised clinical experience under a licensed psychologist.
- Minimum of one year of post‑internship professional experience providing psychological services in clinical, counseling, military, or operational settings; experience with military or high‑demand populations strongly preferred.
- Unrestricted, current license to practice psychology issued by a U.S. state or territory, in good standing and maintained for the duration of employment.
- Ability to obtain and maintain all required credentialing and clinical privileges in accordance with Defense Health Agency and applicable Military Treatment Facility policies.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association, or the ability to obtain prior to start and maintain thereafter.
Board Certification:
Board certification in clinical or counseling psychology from the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP) is preferred; psychologists who are board‑eligible or actively pursuing board certification are highly desirable.
Certifications:
Required: BLS certification. Desirable: certifications or formal training in areas such as executive coaching, resilience training, trauma, suicide risk assessment, or organizational/operational psychology.
Immunization and Health Screening:
Must meet all Army and DoD occupational health and immunization requirements for access to military installations and interaction with Soldiers, to include any mandated vaccinations, tuberculosis screening, and periodic health surveillance.
Citizenship/Legal Requirements:
U.S. citizenship is required. Psychologists must complete and maintain all security and suitability requirements, including a favorable National Agency Check with local agency and credit checks, eligibility for and maintenance of a Common Access Card (CAC), and compliance with installation access procedures.
Required Experience & Skills
- Demonstrated proficiency in assessment, diagnosis, risk evaluation, and evidence‑informed intervention for adults in high‑stress or performance‑focused environments.
- Strong consultation and coaching skills, with the ability to translate psychological concepts into practical recommendations for commanders and staff.
- Proven capability to work independently and as part of a geographically dispersed team, managing complex caseloads, multiple projects, and frequent travel while maintaining professional standards.
Professional Experience:
- Experience delivering psychological services to military service members or comparable populations is strongly preferred, including experience with leader development, selection programs, or organizational consultation.
- Familiarity with Army recruiting, USAREC/USARD operations, or similar operational commands is highly desirable.
Communication:
- Communicate clearly and professionally in oral and written formats with commanders, Soldiers, healthcare providers, and staff at all levels; must read, write, speak, and comprehend English fluently to prepare documentation, conduct training, provide consultation, and interact effectively with both virtual and in‑person unit and command audiences.
Other:
- Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor that meets or exceeds Government standards for business‑like conduct in military environments.
- Must be willing to travel frequently (CONUS and OCONUS) as mission requires, including short‑notice travel in response to serious incidents or emergent command needs.
