Electrical Engineer focuses on the intersection of enclosure design and electrical system integration. They are responsible for the layout, wiring, and thermal management of components housed within metal cabinets, such as industrial control panels, switchgear, and power distribution units.
Core Responsibilities
- Schematic Design: Create detailed electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and panel layouts using tools like AutoCAD Electrical or EPLAN.
- Enclosure Engineering: Collaborate with mechanical teams to ensure electrical components fit within the physical constraints of the sheet metal chassis.
- Thermal Analysis: Calculate heat dissipation requirements and specify fans, air conditioners, or heat exchangers to protect internal electronics.
- Programming & Logic: Develop and troubleshoot Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) code and HMI (Human-Machine Interface) screens.
- Compliance & Safety: Ensure all designs meet UL 508A standards for industrial control panels and NFPA 70 (National Electrical Code).
- Prototyping: Oversee the wiring of first-article builds and perform high-pot, continuity, and functional testing before mass production.
- Education: A Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) or a related field.
- Technical Knowledge: Proficiency in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) and understanding how sheet metal tolerances affect electrical clearances.
- Software Skills: Mastery of CAD (Electrical) and familiarity with ERP systems for managing Bills of Materials (BOM).
- Certifications:
- Professional Engineer (PE): Preferred for senior roles or those signing off on public infrastructure designs.
- Certified Automation Professional (CAP): Highly valued for automation-heavy manufacturing environments.
