About the Role
We are seeking an early-career Instructional Designer I with strong foundational instructional design skills and hands-on video production experience. This role supports learning and development initiatives within a utilities environment and is ideal for professionals with 2–3 years of experience who are comfortable both designing learning experiences and producing engaging video-based training content.
The Instructional Designer will develop and maintain high-quality learning solutions across operational, technical, safety, and customer service topics, with a strong emphasis on video as a primary delivery method.
Key Responsibilities
Instructional Design & Learning Development
- Apply instructional design principles and adult learning theory to develop engaging and effective learning solutions.
- Partner with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to analyze learning needs and translate complex utility concepts into clear, learner-centered content.
- Design and develop training materials, including:
- Instructor-Led Training (ILT) and Virtual Instructor-Led Training (VILT)
- E-learning modules
- Microlearning assets
- Video-based learning solutions
- Create storyboards, scripts, and instructional outlines aligned with performance objectives.
- Maintain, update, and enhance existing learning content for accuracy, consistency, and relevance.
- Ensure all learning materials meet accessibility, usability, and quality standards.
Video Production (Pre-Production, Production & Post-Production)
- Lead video pre-production activities, including:
- Writing scripts and interview questions
- Developing shot lists and production plans
- Coordinating schedules, locations, and SMEs
- Support and execute video shoots:
- Camera, lighting, and basic audio setup
- Coaching on-camera participants
- Perform post-production editing:
- Syncing audio and video
- Cutting and trimming footage
- Adding titles, lower thirds, and simple motion graphics
- Integrating screen recordings and visual enhancements
- Optimize video content for multiple platforms (LMS, intranet, mobile, etc.).
- Ensure all video deliverables adhere to branding, style, and quality standards.
Required Qualifications
- 2–4 years of experience in instructional design, learning development, or a related field.
- Bachelor’s degree in Instructional Design, Education, Learning Technologies, Communications, or a related discipline preferred (equivalent experience considered).
- Working knowledge of instructional design models (e.g., ADDIE or similar).
- Experience designing learning content for adult learners in corporate or technical environments.
- Hands-on experience with video production and editing tools.
- Strong portfolio showcasing instructional design and video-based learning projects.
Technical Skills & Tools
- Instructional design tools such as:
- Articulate Storyline, Articulate Rise, Adobe Captivate (or similar)
- Adobe Creative Suite or equivalent tools
- Video editing software such as:
- Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects, Camtasia (or similar)
- Basic understanding of:
- Camera operation
- Lighting fundamentals
- Audio recording best practices
- Experience integrating video into LMS platforms, Vimeo, or blended learning environments.
Portfolio Requirement
Applicants must provide a portfolio or work samples demonstrating:
- Instructional design projects
- E-learning modules
