Commissioning Coordinator IV

Position Overview
The Commissioning Coordinator IV is responsible for the end-to-end coordination of project commissioning and start-up activities, ensuring all equipment and systems are fully prepared for safe and reliable operation. This role focuses on planning, execution oversight, budget management, deficiency resolution, and stakeholder coordination across multidisciplinary teams.
The position requires strong hands-on commissioning expertise, including prior field experience as a technician or engineer, with the ability to independently execute commissioning tasks and resolve technical issues in real time.
Key Responsibilities
Commissioning Execution & Technical Support
- Coordinate and oversee field commissioning and start-up activities across small to large-scale projects.
- Independently perform hands-on commissioning activities including configuration, calibration, troubleshooting, and start-up support.
- Apply technical expertise to wire, configure, test, and validate PLCs, instrumentation, control panels, and communication systems.
- Provide technical support and resolution for commissioning-related issues throughout project execution.
Planning & Project Coordination
- Develop detailed commissioning and start-up execution plans, including resource planning, scheduling, cost estimates, and risk mitigation.
- Manage commissioning budgets, schedules, and scope alignment across assigned projects.
- Ensure proper turnover from Construction to Commissioning and from Commissioning to Operations through structured walkthroughs and deficiency tracking.
Stakeholder & Contractor Management
- Coordinate internal teams and 3rd-party commissioning contractors to ensure safe and efficient execution.
- Participate in engineering design reviews (mechanical, process, electrical, instrumentation) to provide commissioning input.
- Build and maintain effective working relationships with project teams, construction contractors, and operations stakeholders.
Compliance & Safety
- Ensure all commissioning activities comply with industry standards, safety regulations, and company procedures.
- Maintain strong knowledge of safety practices including Lock-Out-Tag-Out (LOTO), permitting systems, and electrical safety protocols.
- Provide oversight of outage planning for both greenfield and brownfield projects.
Continuous Improvement
- Contribute to updates of commissioning procedures, check sheets, and best practices.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives within commissioning execution processes.
Scope & Impact
- Works closely with project teams, construction, and operations to ensure safe, reliable, and fully functional systems at turnover.
- Provides direction and technical guidance to commissioning teams and field contractors.
- Oversees specialized commissioning activities and supports contractor performance management.
- Manages multiple concurrent projects with tight deadlines and high operational complexity.

- Indirect Influence: Provides mentorship and guidance to Commissioning Coordinators and supporting team members
- Dotted Line Reporting: Project Managers
Required Qualifications
- Technical College Degree or Diploma
- Minimum 10 years of relevant technical experience
- Strong working knowledge of industry standards and codes (API, NEC, CEC, CSA Z662, NFPA 11, etc.)
- Proven ability to lead and coordinate multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders in field environments
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior commissioning experience in the oil & gas industry
- Hands-on experience with rotating and static equipment
Working Conditions
- Office-based role with frequent travel to field construction sites across U.S. pipeline systems (approximately 20–30 days per quarter).
- Requires flexibility for extended hours and occasional after-hours or weekend support (approximately 5–10 occurrences per quarter).
- May involve project-driven schedule disruptions and urgent operational support requirements.
