SCHOOL CROSSING GUARD
GENERAL PURPOSE
The function of this position is pedestrian safety and to facilitate the safe passage of school
children across streets and intersections. This position is part-time and requires serious
commitment to be at the crossing guard post on each school day, both before and after school hours
as required.
TIMING AND SCHEDULING
This is a part-time position which follows the school calendar. Monday through Friday 7:15AM to
8:45AM and 2:30 PM to 4:00 PM or as needed.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
This position works under the supervision of the Police Chief or his designee.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
None
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Reports to designated crossing guard location at the assigned time and remains until
departure time.
Provides safe crossing or passage of school children pursuant to procedures taught during
training.
Monitors potentially dangerous, hazardous traffic problems and reports them to a police
officer for follow up.
Watches for gaps in traffic and walks children across the street or intersection while holding
a STOP SIGN in such a manner as to be visible to approaching vehicles.
When stopping vehicle traffic, makes distinct, decisive, and understandable signals and
gestures.
Must report to the communications center if he/she is going to be late or absent from their
assigned duties.
DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Must be a minimum of 18 years old.
Possess a high school diploma or its equivalent.
Ability to interact with children.
Ability to display good judgment and respond quickly to emergencies.
Must maintain a neat and clean appearance while on crossing guard duty and wear clothing
appropriate for the weather conditions.
Must have the ability to clearly observe vehicle and pedestrian traffic at acceptable
distances and to hear at an acceptable level.
Must be able to hold a hand-held Stop Sign above your head in an upright position while in
the roadway.
Must have the ability work independently and with minimum supervision;
Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
Ability to communicate clearly and concisely with the public.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Must possess, or be able to obtain by time of hire, a valid State Driver’s License.
Knowledge of basic traffic laws and signals.
Must successfully pass a thorough criminal history check including submission of
fingerprints to the State Bureau of Identification (SBI).
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
Issued traffic vest, rain gear and stop sign.

vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee works in outside weather conditions. The
employee works near moving vehicles which may be operating at speeds above the legal posted
speed limit and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, or airborne
particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold, extreme heat.
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
