Hiring Range: The hiring range for this position is $17.30 - $18.38 per hour, depending on skills and qualifications. 

Work Schedule:    Generally, works 7 - 8:30 pm, Monday - Thursday (Fall/Winter). Meets run periodically on Saturdays and or Sundays throughout the seasons.

NATURE OF WORK

As a member of the Aquatics division, individuals in this part-time position are responsible for assisting with overall supervision and planning. Conducts team practice sessions and meets. Work is performed in accordance with standard practice and methods requiring initiative to complete recurring assignments independently and judgment to determine which methods are applicable in any given situation. Finished work is reviewed for accuracy, quality, and completeness. Unfamiliar situations are referred to the supervisor.

Teaches skills and techniques of recreational programming to populations ages 8 and over. Serves as a coach and mentor in support of goals and programs. May participate in special events and/or other activities as assigned.

This position requires work throughout the week including but not limited to early mornings and weekends.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Individuals work under the direct leadership of the Recreation Coordinator - Aquatics to carry out assigned duties, functions, roles, and projects in both routine and complex circumstances.

LEADERSHIP EXERCISED    

Individuals exercise general leadership over participants and work with other Town of Windsor coaches to do so.  ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Individuals in the Coach role are assigned specific assignments, job duties, scope, authority, responsibility, roles, and requirements as determined by the town, department, division, and pursuant to laws, regulations and practices. Individuals in this position must be able to successfully perform, be responsible for, and/or assist in the fulfillment of many job functions and duties, with or without reasonable accommodation.

The following duties and responsibilities are illustrative of the primary functions of this position and are not intended to be all-inclusive:

  • Instruct participants in skills, techniques, and code of conduct in a variety of teaching and instruction methods.?
  • Creates an enjoyable experience for participants of the program while teaching fundamentals of sport or activity. Ensures that all participants have an opportunity to participate in the program.
  • Exercises and teaches safety awareness and practices for skills and programs.  
  • Communicate with participants to improve the success of the program and address any concerns.
  • Provide a positive environment, welcome members, answer questions, and mentor potential new members.
  • Provide regular feedback and program evaluation to the Recreation Coordinator. Discusses concerns and makes recommendations for program improvements including content, marketing efforts, scheduling, etc.
  • Cleans and maintains surrounding program area (to include trash pickup and set-up and take down of equipment) before and after each program.
  • May be assigned lead role responsibilities as needed.
  • Plans, directs and supervises all practices and meets.
  • Ensures all necessary equipment is available, is set up, and property functioning.  
  • Provide constructive feedback to participants and the program supervisor.
  • Ensures safety regulations and procedures are adhered to.
  • Performs related work as required and assigned.
  • Operate a motor vehicle when traveling to and from swim meets (ages 18 and older only).
OTHER DUTIES

Depending on organizational need, additional duties may include the following:

  • Performs related duties as established by law/ordinance or reasonably directed by the town.
  • Assists other town departments/divisions, as necessary. 
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND FORMAL TRAINING 
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Must be at least sixteen (16) years of age.  
  • Minimum two (2) years coach/instructor experience with general knowledge of fundamentals of rules and sport.
  • Prior coaching and/or group-leading experience preferred.
  • Equivalent combination of training and experience that provides evidence that the applicant possesses the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
LICENSES OR CERTIFICATES 
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire. 
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of the policies, procedures, and goals of the Town of Windsor and the department.
  • Knowledge of the sport.
  • Skill in performing Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid activities.
  • Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with the public.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and apply operating policies and procedures.
  • Ability to react quickly and accurately in emergency situations.
  • Ability to maintain composure during mentally, physically, and emotionally stressful situations.
  • Ability to communicate professionally, clearly, and effectively with people inside and outside the organization using verbal and written methods.
  • Ability to perform the necessary functions of the position and to make appropriate decisions consistent with the job expectations and position description.  
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to strive for excellence without winning being the priority; work tactfully with parents; motivate students in a positive way; communicate effectively with the general public and co-workers; make quick decisions when needed; follow and enforce established rules and regulations; work flexible hours.
  • Ability to handle reasonably necessary stress.
  • Knowledge of occupational safety rules and practices.
  • Demonstrated skill in the operation of equipment necessary to perform the functions of the job.
  • Ability to assess participant skill level and lead program accordingly.
  • Must possess a general knowledge of the fundamentals and rules of the sport.
MATERIALS and EQUIPMENT USED

Materials and equipment used include, but may not be limited to the following:

  1. Equipment:  Position requires the use of a variety of equipment: basic equipment, town-owned vehicle (ages 18 and older only), computers, tablets or other digital equipment, digital cameras, copiers, printers, scanners, fax machines, telephones. Rescue tubes, first aid equipment, personal protective equipment, and Automatic External Defibrillators
  2. Materials:  Position requires the use of a variety of potentially hazardous chemicals for cleaning purposes and to maintain proper water chemistry.

The individual may be exposed to potential hazards including toxic or caustic chemicals and may be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions.? Physical demands are described as heavy (exert up to 100 lbs. of force occasionally in tandem, and/or up to 50 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force constantly to move objects). Ability to climb ladder.
