Essential Functions
The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various type of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.
- Operates light, medium and Class B trucks. May operate Class 2 and 4 hydraulic equipment normally assigned to a public works equipment operator. Type of equipment varies by the assigned division.
- Inspect equipment prior to operation to assure that all controls and safety devices are functioning properly. Lubricate and otherwise service the equipment as part of a programmed preventive maintenance schedule. Report malfunctions to the Foreman or Supervisor. Assists in making repairs.
- Performs manual labor in the maintenance of parks, playgrounds, open spaces, and athletic fields. Including mowing, trimming, and seeding; cleaning grounds and disposing of trash; raking, shoveling; and planting, trimming, and removing trees and shrubs.
- Prepares and maintains fields in playable condition for use by the public.
- Repairs playground equipment in a safe condition for use by the appropriate age group.
- Performs preventative maintenance and minor repairs on park vehicles.
- Clear snow and ice from roadways, park and cemetery roadways, walkways, ramps, and steps.
- Performs minor carpentry and painting.
- Operates equipment as directed during snow and ice events
- Assists with similar tasks in the Cemetery and Forestry Divisions as required.
- Responds to weather related emergencies and other emergencies as required by the Director of Public Works or his/her designee.
- Scheduled and emergency overtime may be necessary due to emergency and routine work and acceptance of overtime is expected.
- Performs related work as required, or the situation dictates.
Education and Experience
High School diploma or equivalent; one to three years of related work experience or technical training to perform assigned duties at the journeyman level; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Requirements
- Massachusetts Class B Commercial Driver’s License
- Massachusetts CDL-N Tanker Endorsement
- Massachusetts Class 2A/1C Hoisting Engineer’s License
- OSHA 10 Certification
- CPR
- Ability to pass a driving record check, CORI background check, physical exam and DOT drug screening in compliance with Town requirements
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills
Knowledge: Knowledge of public works functions; knowledge of heavy motor equipment maintenance requirements. General knowledge of landscaping practices. Working knowledge of Massachusetts Public Ethics Laws.
Abilities: Ability to operate construction and maintenance related equipment safely and effectively; ability to work effectively as a member of a crew or independently. Ability to work for extended periods under adverse conditions. Able to be on-call 24 hours per day.
Skills: Skill in the operation and use of all related tools and equipment.
Work Environment
The nature of duties may involve continuous presence of unpleasant or irritating elements, such as considerable noise, odors, chemical fumes, dust, smoke, heat, cold, oil, dirt or grease. Work may be continually performed outdoors, regardless of weather conditions. May be required to be on call for extended hours or being under prolonged pressure during emergency situations.
Physical, Motor, and Visual Skills
Physical Skills: Work requires moderate intermittent physical strength and effort daily, such as, lifting heavy objects, carrying the object(s) and stacking them or placing them in a vehicle or storage area. In addition, pulling, pushing, standing or walking for the full workday may also be involved. A great deal of physical effort must be exerted at this level.
Motor Skills: Essential functions involve close hand and eye coordination and physical dexterity. Manipulation and motor control under conditions which may require extreme accuracy, for example excavating around electric or natural gas utilities.
Visual Skills: Visual demands require routinely reading documents for general understanding and analytical purposes.
