ENGINEERING AIDE - PUBLIC WORKS

Public Works Engineering Aide
40 hrs/wk
Wage Grade:  DD

Under the general direction of the Town Engineer or their designee will perform a variety of tasks in support of the Engineering Dept.GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

1. Assists with survey field work.
2. Clears the survey line of weeds, brush and other obstructions.
3. Works with others to measure distances using a variety of methods.  
4. Sets line or grade stakes and other markers.
5. Cleans and maintains various types of equipment.
6. May plot field data and layout.
7. Performs any and all assigned tasks relating to the Engineering Department.
8. May perform basic drafting and basic title search work.
9. Will be cross trained, as determined by departmental needs.
10. Provide assistance and information to the public visiting the department  
11. Coordinates call before you dig requests and perform the mark-outs in the field.
12. Assists in performing map checks for filing of record maps.
13. Assists in the updating of assessors, topographic and as-built maps
14. Updates GIS layer with street opening data.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Works under supervision of the Town Engineer or his/her designee.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY:

1. Ability to make arithmetic computations and maintain basic records.
2. Knowledge of drafting and mathematics.
3. Ability to use hand tools and surveying equipment.
4. Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
5. Ability to work outdoors and lift/carry survey equipment.
6. Must have computer knowledge and basic skills.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

1. Associate’s degree in civil engineering or the equivalent combination of training and experience.
2. One to two years’ experience in construction or building trades.

The weight of the examination will be 100% experience and training. The candidates will be ranked based on their experience and training as it relates to the required experience and training for this position based on the information contained in their employment application, the supplemental questionnaire if applicable and any attachments they provide.   This examination will be conducted for the Town of Trumbull by the Trumbull Civil Service Board within the authority of Section 7-413 of the 1959 revision of the State of CT General Statutes.  Please notify the Civil Service office in advance of the examination of any disability which may require special accommodation.  Anyone claiming Veterans' Preference must bring original DD 214 document.
