Title: Youth Prevention Coordinator
Type: Full Time; 35 hrs

Grade/Rate: 7 Rate: $38.17hr
Hours: 8:30am – 4:30pm, Monday – Friday; 35 hours (some Thursday nights)

Position Summary
Under the direction of the Director of Youth Services, the Youth Prevention Coordinator is responsible for coordinating the Southington STEPS Coalition Advisory Board and leading the implementation of the community prevention strategic plan. This position plays a key role in promoting youth development, reducing substance misuse, and strengthening community partnerships through education, outreach, and evidence-based prevention initiatives.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Serve as staff liaison to the STEPS Coalition Advisory Board, STEPS Executive Committee, and additional committees as needed.
- Coordinate the development, implementation, and evaluation of the community’s prevention strategic plan.
- Collaborate with the STEPS Outreach Program Coordinator on prevention and community engagement initiatives.
- Oversee collaboration with the Southington Board of Education and Southington Police Department in the delivery of community and school-based prevention programming (e.g., C3/ABC curriculum or equivalent initiatives).
- Work with the Youth Diversion Team to provide case management services to youth diverted from the juvenile court system.
- Serve as a resource and point of support for youth with concerns about substance use/misuse affecting themselves, their families, or peers.
- Address prevention efforts related to all substances of concern within the community, including but not limited to alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, vaping, prescription medications, opioids, heroin, kratom, and emerging substances.
- Implement community-wide interventions including, Public outreach efforts; School and community transition initiatives; Community meetings, events, and trainings; Bi-annual attitudes and behaviors surveys and related evaluation processes; Management of state grant documents and reporting requirements.
- Coordinate outreach efforts, communication campaigns, and public awareness initiatives.
- Design and conduct media and social norming campaigns addressing underage drinking, marijuana, tobacco, and prescription drug use/misuse.
- Collect, analyze, and report on prevention data to measure program outcomes and ensure grant compliance.
- Prepare and submit grant applications, progress reports, and sustainability plans.
- Represent the coalition at local, state, and national levels to strengthen partnerships and promote prevention strategies.
- Oversee and maintain the coalition’s website and social media platforms.
- Coordinate collaboration with local and state agencies, schools, and community organizations.
- Identify and pursue additional funding opportunities, including private grants and sponsorships.
- Schedule meetings and events in coordination with, and subject to approval by, the Director.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Youth Services.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in social services, health services, or a related field; supplemented by a minimum of three (3) years of experience in substance abuse prevention and/or youth and community programming.
- Certification as a Prevention Professional (or active pursuit of certification or will obtain within 1 year).
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience in community prevention initiatives and/or municipal programs.
- Experience planning, coordinating, and evaluating community programs and events.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.

- Demonstrated knowledge of prevention science, including social norms and environmental prevention strategies.
- Knowledge of the Southington community and its leaders.
- Strong technology skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and mass communication platforms.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
- Strong research skills, follow-through, and attention to detail.
- Ability to work collaboratively with staff, volunteers, and community partners.

Terms of Employment
In accordance with the working agreement between the Town of Southington and the United Public Services Employees Union, Local 424-Unit 35.
