RATE OF PAY: $15-$18/HOUR

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

A Library Associate is the public face of the library and upholds the library’s standards of providing a welcoming, accessible environment. A Library Associate primarily helps with public facing library tasks, including circulating materials, reference transactions, and program help. They have a high level of comfort working with the public as their duties include providing excellent customer service to meet user circulation and reference needs; reader's advisory; displays; promoting and aiding with adult and juvenile programs and outreach services; and providing some general office support. Confidentiality of patron records is crucial, and a Library Associate maintains patron privacy. Work schedules do vary, but include weekend and evening shifts. Work is performed under the general supervision the Assistant Directors and is evaluated through conferences, observations, reports, and the general response of the public. Considerable judgment and discretion are required in performing all library functions.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK

  • Assesses customer information and service needs, provides appropriate resources, and provides instruction and assistance to customers in locating, accessing, and borrowing library print and electronic resources.
  • Conducts readers’ advisory interview sessions with customers as appropriate and suggests titles and resources.
  • Creates engaging, interactive environments within the Library.
  • Greets the public as they arrive and makes them feel welcome.
  • Uses all software and hardware to fullest advantage to provide appropriate information to library patrons and conduct transactions.
  • Makes referrals to other staff and other resources outside the library as appropriate.
  • Maintains proper order and condition of all library materials.
  • Helps gather and collate library statistics and usage information.
  • Receives incoming telephone calls and emails, responding to inquiries or referring to appropriate staff.
  • Works with other staff to organize, promote, produce, and evaluate library programs and events for customers of all ages.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Working knowledge of personal computers including MS Office programs.
  • Ability to trouble-shoot problems with library public computers and automation software as well as help patrons with personal technology help.
  • Basic clerical skills including keyboarding, knowledge of decimal order.
  • Working knowledge of spelling, grammar, and vocabulary.
  • Ability to produce written documents that are accurate, clear, and complete.
  • Ability to follow established procedures and to perform detailed work.
  • Ability to work as a member of a team to accomplish common goals.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
  • Ability to promote interest in library services and to present library programs effectively. Upholds the patron behavior policy.

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Undergraduate degree required. Experience in library work preferred. Previous experience working with the public required. Experience in use of Windows-based software required. Must have a valid driver’s license with an excellent driving record.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to bend, reach, and lift up to 25 lbs. in order to handle book trucks, shelve books, assist patrons, and organize shelves.
