What You'll Do
- Perform Technical Inspections: Test, calibrate, and seal or condemn a variety of commercial devices, including retail scales, gasoline dispensers, and fuel oil truck meters.
- Ensure Regulatory Compliance: Enforce Massachusetts General Laws and local ordinances related to unit pricing, scanner accuracy, and merchandise labeling.
- Conduct Field Monitoring: Perform random inspections of retail establishments to verify the weight of pre-packaged goods and check for required vendor licensing.
- Investigate Consumer Concerns: Respond to and resolve complaints regarding short weights or measures through thorough research and corrective action.
- Manage Documentation & Fees: Maintain accurate inspection logs, file mandatory annual reports with the State Division of Standards, and collect applicable sealing fees for the Town.
- High School diploma (or equivalent) plus 1–3 years of mechanical or technical experience, ideally in weights and measures, municipal operations, or a related trade.
- Valid Massachusetts Driver’s License and the ability to obtain certification as a Sealer of Weights and Measures from the Commonwealth within 12 months of hire.
- Regulatory Knowledge: Proficiency in MGL Chapters 94, 98, 99, and 101, as well as NIST (formerly NBS) Handbooks 44 and 133.
- Analytical & Mathematical Skills: Strong ability to assess complex measurement issues and calculate tolerances across Avoirdupois, Metric, Troy, and Apothecary systems.
- Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs and the interpersonal skills required to conduct firm, professional enforcement in retail and industrial environments
