Job Overview
The Town of Palmer is seeking qualified candidates for an anticipated opening for the position of Assistant Town Accountant. This position performs skilled accounting and clerical work for all town departments, including but not limited to analyzing and reconciling general ledger accounts, maintaining accurate financial records, preparing journal entries for all funds, and assisting the Town Accountant in the preparation of various schedules, reports and financial statements.
Duties
- Perform double entry bookkeeping to maintain accurate financial records.
- Assist in the preparation of financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
- Manage account reconciliation processes to ensure accuracy and completeness of accounts.
- Support the preparation of forecasts and budgets to aid in municipal finance decisions.
- Process debits and credits accurately while adhering to established accounting principles.
- Maintain organized documentation for all financial transactions and reports.
- Assist in accrual accounting to ensure timely recognition of revenues and expenses.
Requirements
- Associate degree required; accounting major preferred. Three (3) years of experience in municipal accounting work, or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Proven experience in accounting or a related field is preferred.
- Strong understanding of double entry bookkeeping principles.
- Familiarity with GAAP standards and financial statement preparation.
- Knowledge of debits, credits, and account reconciliation processes.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment while maintaining attention to detail.
- Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively.
- Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Office Suite.
