PARKS MAINTENANCE SPECIALIST

Pay Grade 5

General Statement of Duties

Performs as a lead worker in coordinating and participating in the daily maintenance activities for the

parks and recreational facilities for the Town; assists the Director with recreational programming.

Distinguishing Features of the Class

An employee in this class leads and participates in maintaining the Town parks and recreational

facilities. Work requires the employee to perform short-range planning of work including assigning

work to subordinates, determining the priority of work, ensuring the work is performed safely and

effectively, and determining the quality of work. Employees are responsible for the department's

horticultural activities, including turf management and landscaping. They may also be responsible for keeping swimming pool sanitary, safe, and mechanically sound. Daily duties include testing and balancing water chemistry, vacuuming and skimming debris, emptying baskets, and maintaining equipment like pumps and filters. Work also includes inspecting playground equipment and other departmental facilities for safe working order and use and making minor repairs as needed. In addition, the employee assists the Parks and Recreation Director with other departmental activities, including programming supervision and community center operations. Work requires public contact in answering complaints, resolving problems, and handling service requests.

Employees must be conscious of safety methods to avoid injury to others and themselves. Employees

are subject to hazards in park maintenance work, including working in both inside and outside

environments, in extreme hot and cold weather, and exposure to various hazards such as noise,

moving mechanical parts, chemicals, and atmospheric conditions. The employee may also be subject

to OSHA's final standards on blood-borne pathogens. Work is performed under regular supervision of

the Parks and Recreation Director and reviewed while in progress and upon completion to determine

that proper work methods are being followed and that assignments are carried out correctly.

Duties and Responsibilities / Essential Duties and Tasks

  • Leads in and performs grounds and turf maintenance; mows, weeds, fertilizes, sprays, and

irrigates.

  • Performs semi-skilled maintenance work (carpentry and plumbing) as needed to ensure

adherence to operational procedures; paints facilities and equipment; repairs playground

equipment, repairs doors and windows.

  • Participates in assembling and installing new playground equipment; inspects playgrounds for

hazards and proper conditions.

  • Plans, organizes, implements, and oversees programming activities.
  • Participates in grant writing, administrating, and reporting duties as needed to fund park

improvement and programming initiatives.

  • Assists with coordinating various athletic events, including scheduling fields and teams, etc.;

assists with operation and maintenance of public swimming pool.

  • Assists with marketing and media coverage of programs and events.
  • Participates in the parks maintenance work activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.
  • Handles inquiries for services and complaints concerning facility and grounds operations.

Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities

  • Considerable knowledge of the methods, tools, and equipment utilized in parks, grounds, and

facility maintenance and repair.

  • Considerable knowledge of the work hazards and applicable safety standards associated with

facility and parks maintenance and repair.

  • Working knowledge of horticultural plant materials, design, installations, and maintenance.
  • Some knowledge of liability concerns related to providing parks and recreation services.
  • Skill in the operation of equipment and tools utilized within the section.
  • Ability to maintain assigned equipment and perform minor repairs to small engines. Ability to

establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, program

participants; and subordinates.

  • Ability to prepare and maintain records of work activities.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing,

stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting,

feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.

  • Must be able to perform medium work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up

to 20 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

  • Must possess the visual acuity to operate mobile equipment such as mowers and tractors and

to inspect equipment and facilities,

Desirable Education and Experience

  • Associate degree and/or experience in the area of grounds, horticulture, or facility maintenance

or an equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.

  • Experience in youth and adult program planning and implementation.

Special Requirement

  • Possession of a valid driver's license.
  • Ability to obtain an ornamental pesticide applicator's license.

Starting salary is $35, 413.00 with health, dental, vision and retirement benefits provided.
