Water Aerobics Instructor

The Newtown Community Center is seeking an energetic, welcoming Water Aerobics Instructor to lead group water fitness classes for community members of all ages and ability levels. The instructor creates a safe, enjoyable, and positive atmosphere that promotes participant wellness and engagement, provides direct instruction and motivation, and ensures the well-being of every participant in accordance with Community Center policies and nationally recognized aquatic fitness guidelines.

Essential Functions

• Plan, lead, and instruct water aerobics classes that incorporate professional fitness standards across flexibility, strength, endurance, and cardiovascular conditioning.
• Prepare class plans in advance and adapt instruction to accommodate a range of ages, fitness levels, and physical abilities, including seniors and participants with limited mobility.
• Recommend and demonstrate exercise modifications or progressions so each participant can work safely toward their personal fitness goals.
• Maintain a physical presence with the class at all times and remain aware of pool surroundings and all participants in the water.
• Follow all aquatic safety procedures and guidelines, including those pertaining to health and safety, emergency response, incident reporting, and facility rules.
• Build authentic relationships with participants; greet members by name, answer questions, and foster a supportive, inclusive class community.
• Set up, break down, and maintain cleanliness of water aerobics equipment according to facility cleaning schedules.
• Take attendance and complete required forms, reports, and program records.
• Serve as an ambassador for Community Center programs, with a focus on aquatics and health & wellness offerings, schedules, and member engagement.
• Communicate pool or equipment concerns promptly to the Aquatics Director.
• Attend required staff meetings and training.

Qualifications

Required:

• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Current national water/group fitness certification (e.g., AEA Aquatic Fitness Professional, AFAA, ACE, or equivalent), or willingness to obtain within 90 days of hire.
• Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification (or ability to obtain prior to start date).
• Ability to lead classes from the pool deck and/or in the water, demonstrate exercises, and project voice and energy in a pool environment for the duration of class.
• Reliable availability for a consistent weekly class schedule (morning, midday, and/or evening classes available).

Preferred:

• 1 years of experience teaching water aerobics, aqua fitness, or group exercise.
• Experience working with older adults, arthritis/therapeutic aquatic programs, or adaptive populations.
• Knowledge of music selection, choreography, and the use of aquatic fitness equipment (noodles, dumbbells, kickboards, ankle cuffs).

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand, move, and demonstrate exercises on a wet pool deck and/or in the water for class durations of 45–60 minutes.
• Ability to lift and move class equipment (up to approximately 25 lbs).
• Comfort working in a warm, humid pool environment.
• Part-time, flexible scheduling based on the class calendar; classes typically run 60 minutes.

Pay: $25.00 - $30.00 per hour
