Utility Maintenance Technician I

An employee in this class leads or participates in performing responsible semi-skilled and skilled work in the installation, replacement, repair and maintenance of:

· Pumps, motors, valves, and mechanical equipment at water or wastewater treatment plants and lift stations

· Water and sewer lines

· Meters

· Hydrants

· Other related accessories

Work may include the operation of machinery. The employee is responsible for servicing, installing, repairing, and maintaining equipment. Work assignments vary and the employee must be knowledgeable in general mechanical maintenance, repair and hydraulic principles. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Public Utilities Director and Assistant Public Utility Director.

This position is subject to working indoors and outdoors, in extreme hot and cold weather. Duties require exposure to various hazards such as loud noises, vibration, moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, chemicals, fumes, odors, dust, mist, gases, poor ventilation, and oils. The employee will be required to participate in on-call and call-back work. This position is performed under regular supervision and is evaluated through observation and inspection. Adherence to instructions as well as standard trade and safety practices is required. This position may require shift, weekend, standby, call-back, and holiday work hours.

· Inspects and performs plumbing, electrical, and mechanical repairs to equipment such as pumps, valves, motors, sludge removal machines, chemical feeders, blowers, coolers, air compressors, and heating equipment. Work occurs in a water or wastewater treatment plant, as well as groundwater wells, pumping stations, lift stations and reservoirs.

· Diagnoses equipment problems and determines whether repairs are needed.

· Fulfills work orders in the field with working knowledge of water meter operation and diagnostics. Demonstrates outstanding customer service in communication skills while interacting with the public.

· Performs maintenance tasks for treatment plant systems and sub-systems associated with bar screens, grit collectors, chemical feed systems, basins, digesters, and sludge handling equipment.

· Performs primary maintenance tasks at facilities associated with booster stations, sewer lift stations, pressure reducing valves, metering stations, tank sites, and distribution chlorination stations.

· Installs service lines, water/sewer taps, and meters as needed.

· Assists in unloading, transferring, storing, and using various hazardous chemicals.

· Responds to emergency call outs, can troubleshoot problems, and takes actions to ensure plant and station integrity.

· Works with hired contractors.

· Participates in the maintenance and minor repair of tools.

· Schedules, logs, and inventories maintenance for equipment and tools.

· Demonstrates superior seamless customer service, integrity, and commitment to innovation, efficiency, and fiscally responsible activity.

Performs other duties as assigned by Utility Director and Assistant Director.

· Considerable knowledge of the methods, practices, tools, materials, and equipment used in the installation, replacement, maintenance and repair of water and wastewater facilities, lift stations, and booster stations.

· Basic arithmetic such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and basic algebra.

· Occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions applicable to mechanical maintenance and repair work, including lockout procedures and confined space entry procedures.

· Knowledge and use of email and spreadsheet software.

· Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers and the public.

· Ability to read operation and service manuals.

· Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

· Ability to maintain records of work activities

· Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.

· Must be able to perform very heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally; 50 pounds of force frequently; and 20 pounds consistently.

· Must possess visual acuity to operate mobile equipment such as loaders and dump trucks in a safe and responsible manner.

· Graduation from high school or equivalence and considerable experience in maintenance or construction of water or related utilities; or an equivalent combination of education and experience

· Ability and willingness to attend training as directed by supervisor.

· Possession of a valid North Carolina Class B Driver’s License with tanker endorsement attainable.

· Candidates for employment must pass a pre-employment drug screen and criminal records check.

· Ability and willingness to attend training as directed by supervisor.

· Ability to obtain Certifications as directed by the Public Utility Diector and Assistant Director.
