JOB SUMMARY 

The Environmental and Stormwater Intern performs administrative and field work in the assistance and implementation of Mount Pleasant's environmental programs. This internship provides field experience in stormwater outfall inspections, experience understanding water quality regulations,  water quality sample collection and data analysis, experience with public outreach and education, and exposure to other municipal processes.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: 

  • Assists in all aspects of the implementation of the Town's Stormwater water quality programs to include Public Education and Outreach, Public Participation, Illicit Discharge Detection and Elimination, Construction Management, Post-Construction Controls, and Municipal Good Housekeeping. 
  • Conducts field investigations of stormwater outfalls within priority watersheds in accordance with the Town's Stormwater Management Plan (SWMP). Monitors existing priority areas and assists with identification of new priority areas within Town limits.
  • Prepares and/or processes various inspection forms and utilizes the Town's database management system.
  • Reports significant violations, correspondence, and deadlines to the NPDES Coordinator and others as directed.
  • Assists with the Illicit Discharge Detection and Elimination program by conducting stormwater inspections to detect and eliminate illicit discharges to the Town's Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System.
  • Coordinates, inspects, tracks, and conducts investigations.
  • Explore public outreach and education opportunities in alignment with the Town’s water quality initiatives. This may include the creation of educational materials that can be shared via mail and social media.
  • Plan and implement an informative mail out to residents and/or business owners with the objective of educating on water quality topics.
  • Collects and transports water quality samples for the quantitative analysis of TMDL bacteria pollutants. Assists Town staff with the interpretation of the data trends, field investigations, and the planning of future sampling efforts.
  • Obtains, reviews, analyzes, and reports on data from technical reports and makes recommendations for future environmental work.
  • Attends relevant Town meetings and events as applicable.
  • Receives, maintains, communicates, and coordinates various data, records, and reports including regulations, construction plans, and water quality information.
  • Performs duties as required. 

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK: 

  • High School Diploma 
  • Some college level coursework in environmental science, GIS/mapping, water resources, or engineering required.
  • Currently enrolled in college or graduate courses in related field
  • Valid South Carolina Driver's License 
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 

  • Knowledge of applicable water quality regulations, and standards; 
  • Skill in the use of verbal, visual and written communication; 
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks in a detailed and accurate manner; 
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, professionals and the public; 
  • Skill in MS Office; ArcGIS, Canva
  • Ability to learn new systems and programs in a fasted paced environment. 

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 

The work requires some agility and physical strength, such as moving over rough terrain, carrying equipment on slopes, or standing or walking most of the work period. Work effort principally involves sitting to perform work tasks. There may also be some occasional lifting of objects such, manhole covers and water quality equipment (up to 50 lbs.). There may be need to stretch and reach to retrieve materials. Travel or work particularly during adverse weather conditions and troublesome road conditions may be requested. 

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT: 

The work environment involves everyday discomforts typical of offices, with occasional exposure to outside elements for special inspections, events, or activities. Noise or physical surroundings may be distracting, but conditions are generally not unpleasant. Work may also involve occasional mental stress, such as completing several unrelated tasks within a relatively short period of time. Field work will be necessary. Some travel is required. A Town vehicle will be provided for field work during business hours. Employee may be required to work beyond normal business hours for Town special events, or to attend evening meetings.
