Heavy Equipment Operator/Truck Driver

Job Description: Work involves the operation of heavy-duty constriction equipment used in a variety of public works, utilities projects, and landfill operations. Truck driver answers to the Public Works Director, the Highway Forman and occasional direction from the Office Administrator. The driver also labors when the trucks are not needed. Performs routine work of an unskilled nature requiring the ability to do heavy physical labor efficiently

Accountability: Reports to Public Works Director/Highway Forman.

Equipment Used: Hand and power tools; Heavy and light construction vehicles.

Environment: Inside: 10% Outside: 90%

Duties and Responsibilities

Except as specifically noted, the following functions are considered essential to this position.

Skill in the operation and care of heavy maintenance and construction equipment.

Performs preventive and routine maintenance on equipment.

Makes minor repairs and reports need for major repairs to supervisor and mechanic.

Knowledge of the maintenance requirements, work hazards, safety practices and traffic laws relating to heavy equipment operation.

Works on a road maintenance crew doing general laboring tasks and performs a variety of other heavy manual work in connection with the maintenance and construction of sidewalks and roads.

Loads and unloads stone, gravel, dirt, asphalt, timber and heavy mechanical equipment.

Shovels, rakes, and hand rolls asphalt, and mixes cement.

Attaches and removes snow plows and associated equipment from vehicles and assists in plowing snow, salting and sanding operations, or other activities to mitigate conditions caused by extreme weather conditions.

Uses and performs preventive/routine maintenance of hand tools and other machinery which may include, but not be limited to, mowers, brush cutters, chainsaws, weed whackers, etc.

Occasionally performs traffic control functions at job sites.

Familiar with and executes safe work procedures associated with assigned work.

Maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.

Knows and enforces material disposal policies and procedures at the landfill.

Availability to meet emergency situations.

Performs related work as required.

Licensure/Certification Requirements

Possession of a valid NH Drivers License. We can train a new hire to acquire their CDL while employed with the Town of Milton.

Other Training, Skills and Experience Requirements

HS diploma or GED. At least two years experience operating and maintaining light and heavy construction equipment, performing laboring, grounds or building maintenance work, or any combination of education and experience, which demonstrates possession of the required knowledge, skill and ability.

Summary of Occupational Exposures

May be exposed to herbicides, pesticides, fuels, paints, solvents, hydraulic fluids, and fertilizers.

May be exposed to long periods of sunlight.

May be exposed to poison ivy, oak, or sumac, and insects such as wasps, hornets, bees, etc.

Other Considerations and Requirements

Work involves the operation on a regular basis at least one of the following pieces of equipment: backhoe, front-end loader, grader, etc. The operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of equipment.

Work is carried out with considerable independence and judgment to reach desired result.

Work is reviewed to assure that desired results are obtained and that appropriate care and safety is exercised in equipment operations.

Work assignments of a repetitive nature, once learned, can be executed under general supervision. Senior department personal to insure accuracy and completeness of assignments may constantly check work.

Work often involved heavy physical exertion in extremes of heat, cold, and wet weather.
