Principal Function: The Building Inspector/Zoning Administrator is responsible for inspecting and enforcing codes for both residential and commercial properties and for working with contractors and homeowners to mitigate issues related to code compliance, and all other duties as assigned.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Duties include, but are not limited to:

1. Processes applications for improvement location permits for any new construction, remodeling, restoration, and mechanical areas of structures of any residential and commercial structures in the Knightstown Zoning jurisdiction

2. Examines building plans, blueprints, and electrical diagrams for state and local code compliance.

3. Performs onsite inspections of new buildings and alterations or repairs to existing buildings to ascertain compliance with applicable codes, zoning ordinances, and development plans.

4. Performs follow-up inspections of sites in violation of codes to determine if compliant.

5. Records all documentation for failed and passed inspections, and sends out letters for properties that need further improvements for approval.

6. Enforces town ordinances and initiates legal action, if violations are present.

7. Evaluates, reviews, and resolves complaints from residents having to do with contractors, code compliance, town ordinances, etc.

8. Communicates with property owners in violation of codes/ordinances to gain cooperation and compliance, providing explanations, and guidelines for corrections and/or determining whether codes are in compliance.

9. Ensures compliance with all town building ordinances, making regular spot-checks and investigating complaints of alleged violations.

10. Maintains communication with property owners, contractors, and the public, receiving and responding to questions and concerns.

11. Reviews zoning variance requests as submitted and responds, as appropriate.

12. Researches zoning ordinances and completes miscellaneous paperwork.

13. Researches and interprets pertinent information concerning zoning regulations, and commercial and housing construction requirements, such as relevant state and local codes, and disseminating that information orally and in writing, as requested.

14. Completes administrative duties to include: scheduling meetings, reviewing reports, completing various reports, maintaining an accurate filing system for all documents.

15. Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Town Manager/Public Works Director, or their designee.

16. Communicates with and between all town offices/departments, and other employees within the department, and the Town Manager/Public Works Director, as needed.

17. Attends all meetings, conferences, training sessions, etc., as required by the Town Manager/Public Works Director.

Pay: From $47,132.00 per year
