Position Summary

The Town of Holly Springs is searching for a Certified Firefighter I/Firefighter II (Relief Driver). Firefighter I- This position is responsible for responding to emergency and non-emergency calls for service to protect the life and property of citizens within the community, including Fire, EMS, Technical Rescue, and Hazardous Materials response. This position performs routine maintenance of fire department properties, stations, apparatus, and equipment to ensure constant readiness.

Firefighter II (Relief Driver)- This position is responsible for responding to alarms, driving and operating firefighting apparatus, performing fire suppression duties and participating in fire prevention programs.

SUPERVISORY RELATIONSHIPS

Reports to assigned Fire Captain or Fire Lieutenant. Takes direction from, and reports to the on-scene officer, while operating at emergency response incidents. Work is evaluated through observation and the quality and effectiveness of work completed. Incumbent has no supervisory responsibilities.

The work schedule is a 24-hour rotating shift, including weekends, holidays, and inclement weather.

The starting salary range is $53,555.77-$80,333.66 (Firefighter – Grade F2), $60,175.27-$90,262.90 (Firefighter II/Relief Driver – Grade F4)

Essential Functions

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Responds to calls or reports of actual, possible, or potential fire occurrences, fire alarms, motor vehicle accidents, explosions, uncontained hazardous/volatile/chemical contamination, airport emergency, or other property or life-threatening emergency conditions to suppress, control, remove, contain, or otherwise mitigate the situation; provides emergency support for medical emergencies; searches for and rescues victims; performs or supports the performance of various types of technical rescue operations.
  • Provides emergency and non-emergency incident responses such as public assistance and other service calls which include assistance to physically impaired, evaluation and minor repairs to fire and smoke detection equipment, assistance with pest removal.
  • Maintains patient information in accordance with the Town’s privacy policies, procedures, and practices, as required by Federal and State law, and in accordance with general principles of professionalism as a health care provider.
  • Cleans, repairs and maintains station quarters and grounds.
  • Performs routine inspection and preventive maintenance on fire apparatus to ensure emergency readiness.
  • Cleans, maintains, tests and repairs fire department equipment to ensure emergency readiness.
  • Participates in drills and training sessions, or activities essential to maintaining a constant state of readiness and competency for all types of potential incidents.
  • Conducts public education training programs such as extinguisher usage, helmet and seatbelt usage, senior and child home safety concerns, child safety seat installation, general health and wellness issues and community awareness activities.
  • Performs equipment and station maintenance and repair duties; evaluates equipment readiness and equipment design, construction and adaptation in compliance with departmental goals and objectives within budgetary constraints.
  • Assists with fire cause determination activities.
  • Performs data entry and incident reports as assigned.
  • Conducts site visits to commercial and multiple dwelling occupancies within the City to maintain familiarity, evaluate potential code compliance and safety concerns, and assist the Fire Department with updating pre-fire planning information.
  • Inspects and tests fire hydrants and records flow information for Fire Department use.
  • Reports all accidents to the appropriate authority; follows all policies for reporting.
  • Provides written reports on any inspections and/or tests and makes recommendations to improve performance.
  • Provides public education in fire prevention, including giving talks, demonstrations, and presentations before community groups, schools, and other organizations and institution; conducts station tours; engages in prevention activities.
  • Interacts with businesses and citizens in the community. Coordinates and cooperates with other agencies such as fire departments, police departments, and sheriff’s departments.
  • Ensures all activities are carried out in a safe manner; adheres to all safety regulations; ensures all regulations pertaining to the safe use of equipment are understood and followed.
  • Works extended hours as required to accommodate needs of the department or organization, including attendance at or facilitation of evening or weekend meetings.
  • Responds to all fire and emergency medical calls and renders immediate, effective and appropriate medical treatment in accordance with the department’s medical protocols.
  • Administers emergency medical care as allowed.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Firefighter II/Relief Driver- Drivers and operates fire apparatus and equipment, in the absence of a promoted Engineer or as needed and assigned by shift commander.

Knowledge Skills And Abilities

  • Knowledge of fire department rules and regulations, city ordinances, National Fire Protection Association Standards and Standard Fire Prevention code in addition to other Federal, State and local rules, regulations and standards.
  • Knowledge of hazardous materials, and hazardous substance reference manuals.
  • Knowledge of fire pumping, rescue and aerial apparatus.
  • Skill in operating fire apparatus and pumping equipment, hydraulic, electric and pneumatic rescue and stabilization equipment.
  • Skill in operating ladders, hose lines, two-way radios, cameras, atmospheric and chemical sampling equipment.
  • Ability to obey and understand all traffic laws and regulations statutes governing operation of emergency vehicles.
  • Knowledge of emergency medical and health techniques and methods in alignment with certifications/licenses held.
  • Knowledge of rescue techniques appropriate to one’s specialty.
  • Knowledge of Personal Protective Equipment purpose, use, and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures associated with assigned tasks.
  • Knowledge and skill in the use of specialized equipment and tools required for the position.
  • Knowledge of the Town and Department’s operating requirements, policies, procedures, and practices; and local, State, and Federal regulations related to department programs and operations.
  • Skill in analyzing complex administrative information and issues, defining problems and evaluating alternatives and recommending methods, procedures and techniques for resolution of issues.
  • Ability to plan, develop, implement, and evaluate projects and programs.
  • Ability to develop, interpret and implement regulations, policies, procedures, written instructions, general correspondence, and other department specific documents.
  • Knowledge of administrative policies and procedures of the Town.
  • Ability to establish and maintain accurate records of assigned activities and operations.

Minimum Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • NCDOI, IFSAC, or National Pro-Board Firefighter Level I & II certified
  • Hazardous Materials Operations Level 1
  • NC Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) B Certification
  • NIMS 100, 200, 700, 800
  • NC Class C Driver’s License
  • NC Emergency Vehicle Operator Certification (Firefighter II/Relief Driver)
  • NCDOI, IFSAC, or National Pro-Board Driver Operator Pumps (Firefighter II/Relief Driver)
  • NC non-CDL Class B Driver’s License (Firefighter II/Relief Driver)

Preferred Qualifications

  • NCDOI, IFSAC, or National Pro-Board Technical Rescuer
  • NCDOI, IFSAC, or National Pro-Board Technical Rescuer Vehicle
  • NC non-CDL Class A Driver’s License (Firefighter II/Relief Driver)
