Utility Technician II (Sewer)

The purpose of the position is to ensure the sanitary sewer metering stations are working properly, diagnose sewer line problems, coordinate sewer system maintenance contract efforts in support of the Sewer Supervisor. Employees in this classification perform skilled technical operations and maintenance work. Position is responsible for collecting flow, pressure, and alarm data; televising sewer lines; field operations task related to I&I studies; utility locating and maintaining meter calibrations and meter stations. Additional responsibilities include operation and maintenance of SCADA system, pump station(s) and related utility security alarm systems; supports development of annual sanitary sewer projects for the CIP; review of technical specifications as necessary to ensure compliance with current standards; and performance of research on products and equipment that are identified in the specifications. Must carry a town cell phone at all times and be available/on-call on a 24/7 basis, as directed.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Oversee the operation, maintenance, repair, and upgrades as needed to the SCADA system. This includes monitoring and responding to alarms as needed.

2. Maintains video inspection equipment and recording devices.

3. Performs televised inspections of sanitary and storm sewer lines. Completes appropriate reports for the inspections.

4. Performs skilled tasks; operates a variety of light-to-heavy equipment; oversees the daily maintenance of vehicles and equipment.

5. Ensures safety regulations are followed. Conducts work inspections and safety checks; takes action to correct deficiencies; ensures safety of work environment.

6. Attends staff meetings, safety meetings and training seminars as required.

7. Will be available for on-call duties as assigned.

8. Completes work requests as generated by other departments.

9. Tracks and reports all workflows, using the town’s Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system.

10. Performs snow and ice removal; plows and salts roads; engages in necessary traffic control.

11. Participates in sewer maintenance work, including but not limited to installing and or repairing sewer lines, sewer line maintenance, pump station maintenance

12. Maintains meter and meter stations; clean flumes, calibrate meter, perform quality inspections, etc.

13. Must report to work in, and wear at all times on the job, steel-toed safety shoes of an acceptable standard, effective the first scheduled workday. May not work without safety shoes.

14. Performs other duties as required.

• High school diploma or GED required; supplemented by vocational/technical training in sewer systems operation and maintenance; also supplemented by three or more years’ experience and/or training that includes CCTV inspections; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
• Previous supervisory experience preferred
• Experience using computers and Microsoft Office Suite
• Possession of flagging certification issued by the Virginia Department of Transportation or attain within six months of employment
• Must be able to complete competent person training for trench safety and confined space entry within six months of employment
• Valid commercial driver’s license (Class B) with acceptable record; must be able to attain a tanker endorsement within 12 months of employment
• NASCCO PACP certified or attain certification within 12 months of employment
