- Patrols areas and observes activities; enforces safety rules and regulations to prevent accidents or injuries
- Assists with rescue of helpless swimmers; administers first aid and applies resuscitation measures when necessary
- Keeps first aid supplies and resuscitation equipment ready for instant use
- May give swimming instructions
- May assist in the preparation of accident reports
