What are the responsibilities and job description for the Park Gardener I position at Town of Greenwich?
Preference will be given to current Town of Greenwich employees who are members of Teamsters Local 456.Experience and Education:
Level I:
High School diploma or equivalent, plus six (6) months of work experience performing related heavy manual laboring, grounds maintenance, landscaping, outdoor work, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Valid Connecticut driver’s license.
Level II:
High School Diploma or equivalent, plus two (2) years of groundskeeping, landscaping and gardening or closely related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Valid Connecticut driver’s license.
Valid Connecticut Commercial Junior Operation Certification.
Career Path:
A Park Gardener Level I who completes eighteen (18) consecutive months of service beyond the probationary period may advance to Park Gardener Level II provided the employee:
- Receives a satisfactory performance evaluation or has no current evaluation on file.
- Obtains a valid Commercial Junior Operation Certification.
- Has not received discipline within the past twenty-four (24) months and is not currently subject to a written final disciplinary warning or last chance agreement.
Qualifications:
Demonstrated ability to safely operate all grounds maintenance equipment, tractors, power tools, snowplows and Town vehicles not requiring a CDL.
Working knowledge of gardening, turf care, planting pruning, and seasonal grounds maintenance.
Proven ability to read and write English.
Proven ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Proven ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with colleagues and supervisors.
Proven ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the general public.
Demonstrated ability to make minor repairs on benches, tables, bleachers, and playground equipment.
Demonstrated physical ability to perform all job functions, including lifting 20 lbs. constantly and heavy weight occasionally, pushing, pulling, carrying, climbing, bending and cleaning.
Demonstrated ability to work indoors and out-of-doors, on high and low levels for lengthy periods of time, in various types of weather.
Proven ability to operate equipment standing or sitting for extended periods of time.
Level II Additional Qualifications:
Working knowledge of the technical names and characteristics of common plant species, shrubbery.
Ability to obtain and maintain a Connecticut Commercial Junior Operator Certification.
Demonstrated skill in pruning, planting, fertilizing and cultivating plants, shrubs and turf care.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Performs manual grounds maintenance and landscaping duties, including some construction-related duties.
Prepares sites for planting flower bulbs, grass, plants, and shrubs.
Mows, fertilizes, aerates and waters lawns and landscaped areas.
Trims shrubbery and hedges; cleans walks, pathway and grounds areas.
Performs seasonal maintenance, including spring clean-up, leaf removal, hauling and mulching and debris collection.
Collects litter, glass, refuse and recycling; loads trucks and operates leaf vacuums and related equipment.
Cleans and maintains workspaces, sheds, and equipment; reports repair needs to supervisors and assists with routine repairs, as required.
Assists with snow and ice removal efforts at Town parks, recreational facilities, municipal facilities, and schools; may assist the Highway Division snow operations as assigned.
Applies pest management products in accordance with Parks and Trees Division Integrated Pest Management (IPM) policy, when properly licensed.
Performs other related work as required.

Level II:
Performs all Level I duties in addition to skilled landscaping, horticultural care, and semi-skilled facility maintenance.
Performs semi-skilled construction maintenance including installation and repair of equipment and facilities.
Plants, prunes, cultivates, and maintains trees, plants and shrubs.
Identifies and cares for common landscape plants, shrubs, and materials.
Applies fertilizers and pesticides in compliance with licensing requirements and IPM policy.
Maintains golf course turf, including drainage, fertilization, aeration and relocating holes.
Maintains golf course equipment including benches, ball washers and tee markers.
Assists with tree operations by clearing brush, limbs and debris.
Prepares athletic fields for sporting events.
Installs, repairs and maintains playground equipment, benches, tables, bleachers, and related structures.
Operates and performs minor maintenance and repairs on grounds maintenance equipment, including standard shift vehicles, light trucks, tractors and snowplows.
Performs routine custodial work and semi-skilled maintenance and repair of equipment and building facilities.
Picks up and delivers supplies; assists with inventory and record keeping.
Performs other related work as required.
