What are the responsibilities and job description for the Program Specialist position at TOWN OF GLASTONBURY?

Under general supervision of the Senior Center Supervisor, incumbent facilitates specialized programs for older adults.  This role is 19.5 hours per week as follows: (including half hour unpaid lunch) 

  • Mondays 8:30 – 4:30
  • Wednesdays 8:30 – 4:30
  • Saturdays 9:00 – 2:00

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  1. Leads participants in program activities and events in order to facilitate program objectives and maximize benefit to participants.
  2. Arranges equipment setup, supplies and materials.
  3. Maintains records and statistics of activities.

OTHER DUTIES:

  • Performs other duties as required.

  • Maintains confidentiality of records and information as appropriate.

CONDUCT:

  • Observes safe work practices
  • Represents the Town in a professional and courteous manner at all times

DEPENDABILITY

  • Regularly attends and is punctual for work.

Qualifications:

QUALIFICATIONS PROFILE:

  • Ability to:
    • Work collaboratively with others
    • Communicate effectively, verbally
    • Provide a supportive, encouraging environment for program participants
    • Knowledge of computers and software applications for data entry
  • Skilled in
    • Understanding others’ reactions to interactions and activities, through direct observation, inquiry and active listening 
  • Knowledge of
    • Principles and processes for providing customer service, including needs assessment, meeting quality service standards, and evaluating customer satisfaction

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to:
    • Push/ pull/ lift objects of up to 20 pounds, occasionally
    • Sit or stand, frequently; walk for prolonged periods of time or stoop, occasionally
    • Perform manipulative skills such as keyboarding or filing
    • See objects closely as in typing a document or reading a report; hear normal sounds with background noise, distinguish voice patterns and communicate with speech as in using a telephone
    • Concentrate on moderate detail with some interruption, attend to task 60 minutes or more, remember multiple tasks/assignments given to self and others over long periods; understand and relate to specific ideas, generally, several at a time

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience working with older adults in social work, daycare, long-term care, or recreational setting, preferred
