What are the responsibilities and job description for the Assistant Aquatics Director position at TOWN OF GLASTONBURY?
THIS PART-TIME ROLE IS CURRENTLY 10-15 HOURS PER WEEK WITH A VARYING SCHEDULE THAT INCLUDES EVENINGS AND WEEKENDS. THIS POSTING WILL REMAIN OPEN UNTIL THE POSITION IS FILLED.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Under general supervision, incumbent assists with the supervision and operation of the Town’s aquatics facilities and programs. Supports the delivery of safe, efficient, and high-quality aquatic services for residents of all ages, including swim lessons, recreational swimming and staff training classes. Assists with staff supervision, safety and regulatory compliance, and daily facility operations while promoting a positive and inclusive aquatic environment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- Assists in supervising the daily activities of seasonal aquatics staff including swim instructors, and lifeguards, provides performance feedback as directed. Supports staff training and enforces compliance with safe work practices, risk management standards, and loss control procedures. Assists with administering policies and procedures.
- Ensures a respectful and safe work environment for all by fostering a culture of mutual respect, accountability for ethical behavior and positive leadership, aligning policies, procedures and training with such values. Sets high professional and customer service standards for staff and ensures accountability with those standards.
- Ensures aquatic facilities are in proper condition prior to daily opening; participates in pre-season and post-season cleanup, preparation, setup and closing of aquatic facilities; and conducts routine facility inspections.
- Participates in the delivery of in-service conditioning and skills training programs for swim instructors and lifeguards.
- Reviews accident and incident reports for accuracy and proper completion; follows up as directed and assists with fulfilling equipment and supplies requests.

- Provides support and programming input for special events.
- Performs other duties as required.

Qualifications:QUALIFICATIONS PROFILE:
- Working knowledge of aquatic facility operations, water safety, and risk management practices
- Working knowledge of all aspects of lifeguarding, and swim instruction
- Basic knowledge of maintenance standards, and regulatory requirements
- Ability to assist with staff supervision and training, and to provide lead-level guidance to seasonal aquatics staff
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills, with the ability to work effectively with staff and the public
- Knowledge of state traffic laws
PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Strong swimming skills
- Ability to
- lift and carry items weighing up to 30 pounds, occasionally
- stand and walk for extended periods
- see objects far away as in driving and see objects closely as in reading a report
- hear normal sounds with some background noise and able to distinguish sound as voice patterns
- communicate through speech

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Minimum of two (2) years of swim instruction and/or lifeguard experience
- Minimum of one (1) year of supervisory experience of aquatics staff
LICENSE OR CERTIFICATION:
- Driver’s license
- American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid (Deep water included)
- American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor
- American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor preferred
