General Statement of Duties

An employee in this class provides services to patrons of the library. Assists patrons with locating and checking out materials and resources from the library collection, using computers and other technology, and general information requests. Assists with library programs. Most of the work is performed inside at the library, with some time spent staffing outdoor programs.

Distinguishing Features of the Class

An employee in this class performs non-professional clerical work and provides customer service in the town library. The major responsibilities include providing customers service in person, over the phone, and online via email and messaging tools, assisting with library programs, working at the service desk to complete library transactions, processing, and shelving materials, and assisting patrons in locating materials and using library services. May involve work in a specialty area such as teen activities, community engagement, digital resources, or children's collection. Some independent judgment is required in carrying out daily work assignments. Employee must have a familiarity with computers and internet resources. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Library Director.

Illustrative Examples of Work

  • Aids patrons in the selection of library books and other specialized library materials; serves as a resource for patron's questions.
  • Performs duties at the circulation desk, including checking library books in and out, taking patron requests and renewing materials.
  • Registers new library patrons, reviews and verifies eligibility and application information, records patron in computer record, explains library policies and issues a library card.
  • Acts as receptionist for the library, answers phone and greets patrons.
  • Shelves books in the proper location; straightens and checks books to see that they are correctly shelved.
  • Assists with library programs such as library card drives, book clubs, or after school activities.
  • May participate in community events by staffing a library booth at farmer’s markets, festivals, and other outreach activities.
  • Assists in the closing of the facility by preparing it for the next day’s use, turning equipment off, shelves loose books, and securing the building.
  • Aids patrons in the use of public computers, troubleshooting issues with installed programs and internet services and content.
  • All other duties as assigned
Requirements:

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of circulation system and catalog.
  • Working knowledge of personal computers, mobile devices, and internet resources.
  • Working knowledge of library collection and policies.
  • Ability to multitask.
  • Ability to instruct patrons in the use of library equipment and resources.
  • Ability to adapt to new systems and situations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of patrons.
  • Ability to use good judgement to make decisions when necessary.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands of Work

Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, standing, walking, reaching, grasping, fingering, talking, lifting, bending, pushing, pulling, hearing, and repetitive motions.

Must be able to stand for extended periods of time, reach the top and bottom of shelves, lift 40lbs as well as push and pull loaded book carts and move other equipment up to 75 pounds is required.

Must be able to perform light work exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally; up to 10 pounds of force frequently; and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.

Must possess the visual acuity to prepare and analyze data and figures, operate a computer terminal, and do extensive reading.

Education and Experience

Graduation from high school and some basic work experience sufficient to meet the knowledge, skills and abilities required or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Candidates bilingual in English and Spanish are encouraged to apply.

Salary : $30,194 - $39,438
