The Town of Freeport is seeking an experienced professional to help lead and inspire our Public Works Department. The Deputy Director is a highly responsible management role that serves as second-in-command within the Department, providing leadership and operational oversight under the general direction of the Public Works Director. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong interpersonal and communication skills, along with the ability to build effective working relationships across departments. Candidates must possess extensive knowledge of public works operations and demonstrate proficiency in both verbal and written communication.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as Public Works Director in the Director’s absence, ensuring continuity of operations.
  • Plans, schedules, and assesses daily workloads, assigns work to crews, and inspects work in progress.
  • Respond to public inquiries and issues related to Public Works services.
  • Implements and oversees employee training program that promotes cross-training and skill development.
  • Contribute to strategic planning for departmental staffing, resources, and financial management.
  • Oversee procurement of materials, equipment, and services in a cost-effective manner.
  • Ensures staff training and safety compliance.
  • Remain on-call for emergency response and perform Performs the duties of an equipment operator, truck driver, or laborer as needed.

Position Requirements:

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent, with three to five years of experience in a similar environment preferred. Any equivalent combination of training and experience which permits the effective performance of all job responsibilities considered.
  • Valid Maine Class B driver’s license.
  • Working knowledge of the municipal budget process.
  • Strong knowledge of public works construction, maintenance practices, and related equipment operations.
  • Familiarity with applicable regulations and standards, including DigSafe laws, OSHA requirements, and Work Zone Safety, and Traffic Control guidelines.
  • Proficiency in learning and utilizing a wide range of software systems.
  • Must pass a pre-employment physical and drug/alcohol screening; must be able to pass an equipment and driving test to be administered by the Public Works Director or their designee.

Job Details:

  • Schedule: Monday - Thursday, 6:00am to 4:30pm
  • Must be available for additional hours during wintertime operations
  • Salary: $91,000 annually, commensurate with experience
