Job Description

The Town of Falmouth is seeking a skilled, motivated, and dependable individual to join our Falmouth Fire Rescue team as a full-time Assistant Fire Mechanic. This is a critical, hands-on role responsible for supporting the inspection, maintenance, repair, and testing of fire apparatus and equipment that directly support the delivery of essential emergency services to our community.

This position offers a stable, full-time schedule, comprehensive benefits, training, and the opportunity to perform meaningful, mission-driven work alongside a dedicated public safety team. The Assistant Fire Mechanic works 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with after-hours work as needed.

Under the direction of the Master Fire Mechanic, this position:

  • Performs maintenance and repair of fire apparatus, heavy trucks, and related equipment;
  • Assists with disassembly, diagnostics, repair, and testing of mechanical systems, including engines, electrical systems, welding, and body work;
  • Conducts routine inspections and performs necessary adjustments to ensure apparatus readiness;
  • Operates fire apparatus and associated equipment in support of maintenance and testing;
  • Assists in preparing equipment for state inspection, including road testing;
  • Supports training of Fire Department personnel in the proper operation of apparatus and assists with driver qualification processes;
  • Responds to apparatus-related incidents, including on-scene evaluation, documentation, and reporting when vehicles are involved in accidents;
  • Prepares work orders, tracks labor and materials, and maintains accurate maintenance records;
  • Assists with equipment specifications and ordering parts and materials;
  • Responds to after-hours calls as needed to support operational readiness; and
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications: Must have a high school diploma or equivalent and a minimum of three (3) years of experience as a skilled tradesperson, heavy truck mechanic, or completion of a formal apprenticeship; or an equivalent combination of education, training, or experience which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the essential functions of the position.

The successful candidate must have a Massachusetts Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL-B) with Air Brake endorsement and a Massachusetts Hoisting Engineer License, Restriction 1C, or have the ability to obtain these licenses within six (6) months of employment. The Town is willing to train and support the right candidate in obtaining the required licenses.

Must have demonstrated experience with mechanical repair, diagnostics, and maintenance of heavy equipment, and a working knowledge of heavy truck systems, including braking, lighting, and safety systems.

Must also have familiarity with Massachusetts vehicle inspection requirements, strong organizational skills, the ability to manage multiple priorities, and a demonstrated commitment to safety, reliability, and public service. The ability to work independently and collaboratively is essential.

The successful candidate must pass a comprehensive background check, including a Massachusetts Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) check, and a pre-employment physical.

Expected Starting Hourly Rate: Step 1 ($33.06/hour*) to Step 3 ($38.75/hour*) of the 6-step pay scale, commensurate with qualifications and experience, plus an annual stipend of $686.40, paid biweekly.   • Rate reflects FY25 contract and is subject to an update upon ratification of a successor agreement.
