MECHANICAL EQUIPMENT OPERATOR II (MEO-II)

The Town of Falmouth seeks a dependable and safety-conscious individual to join the Highway Division of our Department of Public Works as a full-time Mechanical Equipment Operator II (MEO-II). This position helps maintain safe, accessible, and reliable roadways, drainage infrastructure, and other public facilities throughout the community.

This is a full-time, year-round, benefit-eligible position that works 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Overtime opportunities are available for weather-related operations, emergency response, and other operational needs, and overtime worked between midnight and 7:00 a.m. is paid at double time. In addition, the Town provides opportunities to obtain additional licenses and participate in professional development that supports career advancement within the DPW.

Under the direction of the Highway Superintendent or their designee, the MEO-II performs skilled manual work involving public works construction and maintenance and the operation and servicing of specialized heavy equipment and vehicles. Key responsibilities include:

• Operating trucks, backhoes, front-end loaders, rollers, street sweepers, roadside mowers, basin-cleaning equipment, trailers, tractor tandems, and other specialized public works vehicles and equipment;
• Hauling, loading, and unloading materials and inspecting, servicing, and performing routine maintenance on assigned vehicles and equipment;
• Constructing, repairing, and patching streets and sidewalks and installing, repairing, and cleaning drainage components, catch basins, guardrails, fencing, and signs;
• Laying pipe, maintaining stormwater infrastructure, operating hand and power tools, performing excavation and manual labor, and assisting with other public works construction and maintenance activities; and
• Performing snow and ice control, responding to emergency call-back assignments, making emergency repairs, and assisting other crews, DPW divisions, and Town departments as assigned.

When not operating specialized vehicles or equipment, the MEO-II performs manual labor and other Highway Division maintenance duties as needed. The MEO-II also provides direction to a small crew when assigned.

Although this position is not regularly assigned to the Waste Management Facility, the MEO-II may occasionally provide coverage there, including operating equipment used to transfer or move municipal solid waste and load railcars.

Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent and a minimum of two (2) years of experience in public works construction and maintenance activities involving the operation of heavy and specialized equipment; or an equivalent combination of education, training, or experience that demonstrates possession of the required knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the essential functions of the position.

The successful candidate must also complete a Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) background check and pass a pre-employment physical examination and drug screening.

The successful candidate is dependable, safety-conscious, hardworking, and able to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team. Candidates must be able to operate equipment safely and effectively, lift and/or move up to 100 pounds, safely perform physically demanding work throughout the workday, and maintain positive working relationships with coworkers and the public.

Required Licenses:

• Massachusetts Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL-A) with Air Brake and Tanker Endorsements;
• Massachusetts Hoisting Engineer License with Restrictions 2-A and 4-E; and
• OSHA-10 Certification (or ability to obtain within the first six (6) months of employment)

The Town will consider strong candidates who do not currently possess a CDL-A. The selected candidate will receive training and support to obtain the required license through the Town’s in-house CDL training program and must obtain the required license within the first six (6) months of employment. The successful candidate must also obtain OSHA-10 certification within the first six (6) months of employment.

Expected Starting Hourly Rate: Step 1 ($28.36/hour) to Step 3 ($30.67/hour), commensurate with qualifications and experience, with eligibility for annual advancement up to Step 9.
