FORESTRY MAINTENANCE WORKER

The Town of Falmouth is seeking a full-time Forestry Maintenance Worker to join our Parks and Forestry Division within the DPW. This is a full-time, year-round, benefited position that works 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with substantial opportunities for overtime. Overtime worked between midnight and 7 a.m. is paid at double time, and the Town provides opportunities to obtain additional licenses and participate in professional development to support career advancement within the DPW.

Under the direction of the Forestry and Tree Care Supervisor, the Forestry Maintenance Worker helps maintain the health, safety, and beauty of Town-owned trees and landscapes in parks, recreation areas, and other public spaces. This position also performs general public works construction and maintenance projects for Town-owned property, facilities, and structures, including parks, playgrounds, recreation areas, school grounds, and cemeteries. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Pruning and removing overhanging branches to eliminate hazards and maintain tree health, felling dead or dangerous trees, and planting and transplanting trees using specialized equipment such as a hydraulic, truck-mounted bucket hoist, air compressor, jackhammer, power saws, woodchipper, stump grinder, aerial equipment, and other equipment pertinent to forestry and insect and disease control;
  • Assisting with tree surgery and micro-injection treatments for insect and disease control;
  • Performing landscape maintenance, including seeding, loaming, fertilizing, raking, rolling, weeding, mowing, and watering and irrigation repair and installation;
  • Planting, trimming, and maintaining hedges, shrubs, and flower beds;
  • Raking and disposing of leaves and other debris;
  • Digging and back-filling excavations;
  • Maintaining and marking athletic fields and tennis courts; patching, repairing, and painting benches and fences; and installing and maintaining playground equipment;
  • Handling and transporting heavy materials up to 100 pounds;
  • Operating vehicles and equipment for snow and ice control work, including plowing, sanding, and de-icing roads, sidewalks, schools, parking areas, and other facilities.

Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent and a minimum of one (1) year of experience in tree maintenance or public works construction and maintenance activities; or an equivalent combination of education and experience which demonstrates possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the essential functions of the position.

This position requires a Massachusetts Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL-B) with Air Brake endorsement and Massachusetts Hoisting Engineer License, Restriction 2A. However, the Town is willing to train the right candidate through our in-house CDL training program to obtain his/her CDL-B and support him/her in obtaining the required hoisting license. The successful candidate must also have the ability to obtain OSHA-10 Certification within 180 days of hire and must pass a pre-employment physical and drug screening test.

The ideal candidate has a working knowledge of arboriculture and tree treatment methods and general knowledge of tree surgery, the use of common insecticides, and safety precautions for heavy equipment operations and mechanics. Must have the ability to operate power tools, perform heavy physical tasks under adverse conditions, and perform work in confined spaces. May serve as a confined space attendant and may experience exposure to hazardous chemicals.

Expected Starting Range: Step 1 ($25.99/hour) - Step 3 ($28.11/hour), commensurate with qualifications and experience, with room for yearly advancement along the 9-step pay scale.
