JOB DESCRIPTION
Position Summary
The Assistant Treasurer/Collector assists in all operations of the Treasurer/Collector's Office, including tax collections and billing, treasury functions, local revenue collections, cash management, payroll, accounts payable, investments, debt service, and records management. The position serves as Acting Treasurer/Collector during temporary absences in accordance with Massachusetts General Laws and Town bylaws.
Supervision
Works under the general supervision of the Treasurer/Collector. Performs recurring assignments independently while referring unusual situations for guidance. This position does not supervise other employees.
Essential Duties
- Assist with tax collections, tax billing, treasury operations, payroll, and accounts payable.
- Prepare payroll, vendor payments, and department bills.
- Assist with cash management, investments, debt service, and annual audit preparation.
- Maintain financial records and department files.
- Respond to taxpayer inquiries and explain tax procedures.
- Conduct research and resolve customer questions and complaints.
- Serve as Acting Treasurer/Collector during temporary absences.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Associate degree in Business Administration or a related field and 1–3 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Requirements
Ability to be bonded and successfully pass a CORI check.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of municipal office practices, Massachusetts General Laws, accounting principles, tax software, Microsoft Office, and customer service. Strong communication, organizational, mathematical, and problem-solving skills. Ability to manage multiple priorities and maintain accurate financial records.
Physical Requirements
Primarily sedentary office work with occasional standing, walking, bending, and lifting of typical office materials. Frequent computer and telephone use.
