Summary of Position:
Perform construction and maintenance work in support of the goals and mission of the Construction Program in the Public Works Department.
Construction Worker I Grade N06 $42,475.00 – $55,217.00
Construction Worker II Grade N08 $46,828.00 – $61,336.00
Construction Worker III Grade N09 $49,170.00 - $63,921.00
What you can expect to be doing (Essential Functions):
•Performs masonry work including mixing mortar, digging, setting forms, pouring concrete, etc.
- Operates and maintains equipment and hand tools.
•Assists with inclement weather and special event response.
•Assists in traffic control measures to provide a safe work zone, including proper placement of signs and cones.
- Serves on the rotating on-call schedule.
•Completes other tasks as assigned.
Do you supervise or not?
- Construction Worker I and II: This position has no responsibility for the direction or supervision of others.
- Construction Worker III may occasionally lead small teams in minor activities.
What are the physical demands?
- Work is performed in the field, involving standing, walking, bending, crouching, climbing, and stooping with hands and arms, pushing or pulling, lifting, and repetitive motions.
- Regular exposure to outdoor weather is required. The role demands use of equipment requiring fine motor skills and includes periodic heavy lifting—occasionally up to 100 pounds, frequently 10–25 pounds, or consistently 20–50 pounds.
- Operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions, and exposure to fumes or airborne particles.
- Work occasionally requires exposure to wet, humid conditions (non-weather), exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to extreme heat (non-weather).
- Exposure to the risk of electrical shock, exposure to vibration, and will be required to wear personal protective equipment.
- Work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).

The work is typically performed in a variety of environments and locations involving high heat, extreme temperatures, difficult terrain, and varying heights, confined spaces, limited visibility, and hazardous atmospheres.

Knowledge
All levels:
- Construction Worker I – No knowledge of general construction methods and practices required.
- Construction Worker II – Basic construction methods and/or practices of sidewalk and retaining wall maintenance. Familiar with concrete and brick pavers
- Construction Worker III – Skilled construction methods and/or practices of sidewalk and retaining wall maintenance. Familiar with concrete and brick pavers
Ability to
All levels:
• Read, write, and perform basic mathematical calculations.
• Communicate effectively (orally and in writing);
• Perform routine assignments with a team
•Work a flexible schedule including holidays, weekends, and inclement weather on an as needed basis.
- Work on the rotating on-call schedule

Construction Worker II:
• Work independently or with teams to perform routine assignments.

What is education and/or experience do you need to be considered for this job?
Experience:
- Construction Worker I – No experience required.
- Construction Worker II – At least one year of job-related experience.
- Construction Worker III – At least three years of job-related experience.
Education:
- Construction Worker I – No high school diploma or equivalency is required.
- Construction Worker II-III – High school diploma or equivalent, or the ability to obtain one, is required.

- All Levels – Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
• Construction Worker II/III – Successful completion or ability to readily obtain the work zone traffic control certification.
• Construction Worker III – Possession of or ability to readily obtain a minimum of a Class B CDL issued by the State of North Carolina. Successful completion or ability to readily obtain the Competent Person Certification in Shoring and Trenching or Confined Space Training.
