Public Utilities Worker I

The Town of Burnsville is seeking a qualified applicant for the position of full-time Public Utilities Worker I, who, under the general supervision of the Public Works Director and Public Works Supervisor, performs a variety work in the maintenance of municipal water distribution systems, the installation of water services, municipal sewer collection systems and related facilities. Candidates for this position must have an accredited high school diploma or possess a GED and a valid North Carolina driver’s license and be willing to obtain a C-Distribution License and a Grade 1 Collection License. Candidates with a Class B CDL are preferred.

Tasks involved could include the following:

  • Installs and repairs water and sewer lines, water meters, valves, manholes, fire hydrants and other equipment
  • Makes water taps and installs meters
  • May be responsible for reading water meters and reporting the results
  • May operate various equipment and heavy machinery within the public works field.
  • Responsible for some mowing and maintenance
  • Perform related duties as required.

Incumbents must be able to perform the physical life functions of climbing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pulling, pushing, grasping, lifting, talking, hearing and repetitive motions; work involves exposure to inclement weather conditions; some personal safety hazards involved in work.

Applicants must submit to a background check and drug test.

Salary is negotiable dependent upon qualifications and experience.
