Position Summary/Purpose:
Performs a variety of manual labor tasks to support the maintenance and upkeep of Town roads, properties, and infrastructure.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities

- Perform assigned tasks related to road maintenance and public works projects
- Remove and dispose of storm debris and roadside litter; transport materials to the Transfer Station
- Operate snow removal equipment; plow, sand, and salt roads; shovel sidewalks as needed
- Perform routine maintenance on trucks and equipment
- Mow and maintain grass on Town-owned properties
- Operate equipment such as woodchippers and other small machinery
- Install and replace traffic signs
- Perform minor maintenance tasks, including painting interior surfaces
Other Functions:
- Assist other departmental staff as needed
- Perform related work as assigned
Supervision:
Supervision Received: Works under the direction of the Union Foreman, Highway Supervisor, and the Director of Public Works
Supervision Given: None
Minimum Required Qualifications
Education, Training and Experience:
- Graduation from high school or GED
- Experience in construction, maintenance, or repair work preferred
- An equivalent combination of education and experience demonstrating the ability to perform the job will be considered
Special Requirements:
- Must have a valid CT driver’s license.
- CDL Class B preferred

Knowledge:
- Basic methods, materials, and equipment used in construction, maintenance, and repair activities
Skills and Ability:
- Ability to perform physically demanding manual labor for extended periods
- Ability to work safely in a variety of conditions
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
- Ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with coworkers and the public
Equipment and Tools Used:
Heavy Equipment:
- Highway trucks and snowplows.
Small Equipment and Tools:
- Chainsaws, shovels, rakes, weed trimmers, lawn mowers, woodchippers, air compressors, jackhammers, plate compactors, power blowers
Materials Handled:
- Includes, but is not limited to pipe, catch basins, asphalt (hot and cold patch), gravel, sand, salt, soil, vegetation, paint, chemicals, and solvents
Physical Requirements:
- Frequent standing, walking, lifting, bending, and use of hands and tools
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds regularly and heavier weights occasionally
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks in outdoor environments
Vision Requirements:
- Close, distance, color, peripheral vision, and depth perception are required
