GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
An employee in this classification performs under the general direction and supervision of the Landscape Director. Responsible for performing routine, semi-skilled work in landscaping, lawn care, planting/watering of flowers in town parks, town building maintenance, carpentry, minor repairs, minor rock work repair and general upkeep of grounds and facilities.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this class performs and assists in a variety of semi-skilled tasks in the landscaping of buildings, grounds, and equipment as well as town building maintenance. Work requires familiarity with and competence in basic practices of one or more of the lawn care maintenance, landscaping trades and minor building and maintenance upkeep. Assignments will include but are not limited to routine lawn care and grounds maintenance work requiring the operation of small power-driven equipment and/or light trucks. The employee must also exercise tact and courtesy in working with outside vendors. The employee must have the ability to execute details of work according to specific instructions and be able to adapt to frequent and varying changes in the work schedule. Work involves evening and weekend hours but works normally Monday through Friday; 7 am – 3:30 pm

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Maintains parks in good order, cuts grass, gathers and removes trash, spray weeds, fertilize turf areas, string trimming and edging all maintained turf areas.
- Cuts, prunes, and trims trees, shrubs and hedges, leaf clean-ups, removes fallen limbs.
- General landscaping practices in Town parks and Town properties.
- Flower bed maintenance in Town parks and Town properties (watering, weeding, planting, spraying, pruning etc.)
- Shovels snow from sidewalks and steps, apply de-icing materials.
- Maintains and services maintenance and landscaping equipment.
- Involved with the decorating of the Town and parks for Christmas.
- Works during Special Events such as 4th of July and Christmas in the Park.
- Operates light power equipment in connection with the above tasks.
- Runs errands, picks up and delivers supplies and materials.
- Assist with general facilities maintenance including minor repairs, inspections, and upkeep of Town buildings and structures.
- Perform basic carpentry, painting, pressure washing, and preventative maintenance on Town owned facilities.
- Repair and upkeep of rock work around town.
- Inspect public areas and facilities for safety hazards and report or correct issues as needed.
- Operate light trucks and equipment in support of facilities and ground maintenance tasks.
- Respond to maintenance requests and work orders in a timely and professional manner.
- Performs other tasks as required or assigned by the Landscape Director.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- General knowledge of the tools, materials, and equipment used in park lawn maintenance.
- Ability to do minor repairs and maintenance of town facilities.
- Ability to do minor rock work repairs on town properties.
- Ability and knowledge to perform basic carpentry and maintenance tasks.
- General Landscape knowledge of planting, flower identification, weeding, pruning etc.
- General knowledge of safety practices and precautions applicable to duties.
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
- Ability to deal courteously with the general public, volunteers, and fellow employees.
- Ability to communicate well, both orally, and in writing.
- Ability to be a self-starter. Work independently, and work cooperatively.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must be able to perform basic life operations of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, hearing, and repetitive motions.
- Must be able to perform light work, exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
- Must possess the visual acuity to prepare and analyze data and figures, to operate a computer terminal, to operate machines, and to use measurement devices.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- 2 years ofexperience in Landscaping and Lawn care or facility maintenance.
- NC Pesticide license preferred but not required.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Possession of a valid North Carolina Driver’s License during the time of employment.
