WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING:

The Fleet Services Division is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Heavy-Duty Diesel / EVT Fleet Maintenance Technician (Technician III / IV level) to support a fast-paced, multi-discipline fleet operation. This position performs advanced preventive maintenance, complex diagnostics, and high-level corrective repairs on heavy-duty diesel vehicles, emergency response apparatus, and specialized municipal equipment, many of which are mission-critical assets supporting
public safety and essential services.

As a senior member of the Fleet Maintenance team, this position is responsible for performing advanced mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and electronic diagnostic and repair work on heavy duty diesel municipal vehicles and equipment, including fire apparatus and emergency vehicle systems, in accordance with manufacturer specifications, EVT standards, and industry best practices. Work is performed with a high degree of independence and technical judgment
under the general supervision of the Fleet Services Supervisor.

This position performs highly specialized technical work on a diverse fleet that includes fire apparatus, heavy-duty trucks, construction equipment, and other complex support equipment. The incumbent is expected to diagnose and resolve the most complex and safety-sensitive issues, support fleet uptime for critical operations, and provide technical guidance and mentorship to other technicians as needed. The successful candidate will demonstrate expert level proficiency, a strong commitment to safety, and consistent delivery of high-quality workmanship.

A SAMPLE OF THE ESSENTIALS:

Heavy-Duty Diesel & Fire Apparatus Maintenance

• Perform advanced diagnostics, preventive maintenance, and complex corrective repairs on heavy-duty diesel municipal vehicles, including refuse trucks, fire apparatus, bucket trucks, construction equipment, and other specialized fleet assets
• Diagnose, repair, and overhaul fire apparatus systems, including fire pumps, pump transmissions, valves, proportioning systems, and related components as needed.
• Troubleshoot and repair powertrain, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, electronic, air, HVAC, and fuel systems on heavy-duty and emergency response vehicles
• Diagnose and repair advanced electrical systems, including multiplexed data networks, CAN bus systems, and emergency vehicle control modules
• Repair and maintain hydraulic systems, including pumps, cylinders, valves, hoses, and PTO-driven components
• Diagnose and repair diesel engine systems, emissions and aftertreatment systems (DPF, DEF, SCR), exhaust systems, and engine management controls

Advanced Technical & Diagnostic Work

• Utilize OEM diagnostic software, scan tools, schematics, and service manuals to diagnose complex mechanical, electrical, and electronic failures
• Interpret technical manuals, wiring diagrams, blueprints, and specifications to perform accurate and safe repairs
• Perform major component repairs and overhauls, including engines, transmissions, axles, driveline components, and hydraulic assemblies
• Diagnose and repair mobile power systems, including 120/240VAC generators, inverters, and auxiliary electrical systems
• Repair and maintain specialized emergency vehicle electrical and warning systems in accordance with EVT standards

Preventive Maintenance & Inspections

• Perform comprehensive preventive maintenance inspections on heavy-duty vehicles and emergency apparatus
• Conduct North Carolina State Safety and Emissions Inspections, as applicable
• Inspect, service, and replace vehicle fluids, filters, belts, hoses, brakes, tires, and suspension components
• Identify potential failures and recommend corrective actions to prevent equipment downtime and safety risks

Field Service & Emergency Response

• Perform field servicing and emergency repairs to restore vehicles and equipment to operational status
• Serve as a key technical resource during emergency operations and adverse weather events
• Support continuity of operations for public safety, utilities, and essential municipal services

Technical Leadership & Collaboration

• Serve as a technical resource and mentor to other fleet technicians, providing guidance on complex diagnostics and repairs
• Assist with troubleshooting escalated or high-risk repairs that require advanced expertise
• Maintain professional working relationships with OEMs, vendors, and technical support representatives

Documentation & Systems

• Accurately document inspections, diagnostics, repairs, and labor hours in the fleet management system
• Enter detailed work order notes to support compliance, cost tracking, warranty recovery, and asset history
• Utilize fleet software and diagnostic tools to support data-driven maintenance decisions

General Responsibilities

• Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in a safe, organized, and professional condition
• Comply with all safety regulations, policies, and procedures
• Assist with shop operations and collaborate with team members as needed
• Perform other job-related duties as assigned

WHAT YOU'LL NEED:

• High school diploma or GED
• Minimum of 7 years of experience in heavy-duty diesel vehicle and equipment
  maintenance, including complex diagnostics and repairs
• Demonstrated experience working on heavy-duty diesel municipal vehicles and
  equipment, such as refuse trucks, fire apparatus, construction equipment, or similar
  specialized fleet assets
• Proven experience diagnosing and repairing advanced mechanical, electrical, hydraulic,
  and electronic systems, including multiplexed and data-controlled vehicle systems
• Valid North Carolina driver’s license
• Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or the ability to obtain one within 6 months of hire.
• North Carolina Inspection License or ability to obtain one within 6 months of hire.
• EVT Certifications F1-F6 or ability to obtain them within 12 months of hire
