Job Description

Library Technician - Youth and Adult
Library Services
FLSA Status – Non-Exempt
Part-time Hourly - Level 4

JOB SUMMARY:
The Library Technician provides courteous and friendly assistance with Library use and technology to people of all ages and from a variety of backgrounds, cultures, and experiences. Performs computer-based tasks related to loaning Library materials and maintaining patron borrowing records. Must be available to work evening and Saturday shifts.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Works under the general supervision of the Head of Youth Services.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
None. May provide instruction or training to newer or lower level employees.

MAJOR DUTIES:
1. Provides customer service to patrons in-person and by telephone, answering questions on the use of the Library, on available services, on borrowing polices, and on the computer catalog, periodical lists and indexes; Directs patrons to locations of various collections, and advises on reading materials; Refers questions requiring further research, decision-making, or time to the appropriate persons, and routes telephone callers as required.

2. Registers new borrowers- reviewing application forms for completeness, accuracy, and appropriate identification, verifying signatures, and entering information into the computer database; Renews patron library cards and updates contact information on patron library accounts.

3. Searches for requested and reserved materials on computer database and on shelves for individuals, teachers, class projects, and other libraries; Maintains records on status of requests and notifies patrons when items are available; Refers special cases to supervisor.

4. Charges and discharges materials using the computer system; Checks accuracy of all dates and numbers; Sorts returned materials by classification and by library; Returns materials to shelves accurately in specific sequence or prepares for statewide delivery routing; Examines materials for physical damage and takes appropriate action.

5. Reviews patron accounts for long overdue items and unpaid bills; instructs patrons on payment options for overdue, lost, or damaged library materials, in consultation with the Head of Youth Services, exercising judgement to offer flexibility on a case-by-case basis.

6. Assists with all aspects of programming for children ages 0-10 and teens ages 11-17, including craft programs, story times, book clubs, weekly teen programs, and special events and performances; Assists with preparation and presentation of annual Summer Reading Program; May be asked to assist during school visits and community outreach events

7. Assists in preparing book displays, flyers, exhibits, and posters.

8. Works on special projects, as assigned; May be asked to assist with Summer Reading Club, craft programs, and other activities.

9. Performs other duties as related or assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
High School Diploma or equivalent, PLUS one (1) to three (3) years of experience in a library, office, or retail environment; OR equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to work with alphabetical and numeric organization
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Knowledge of information tools, and an understanding of the changing library service environment
  • Excellent technology skills; Ability to operate a personal computer and an intermediate skill level with Microsoft Excel and Word; Ability to use listed tools
  • Proficient customer service skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; Ability to communicate with cultural competence
  • Experience working in a customer service capacity with people of differing ages and backgrounds
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle stressful situations
  • Ability to work well as a part of a team and maintain effective work relationships with co-workers and the general public
  • Preparedness to encounter challenging interactions and willingness to learn and seek out solutions with the help of supervisors and colleagues
  • Availability to work weekday and Saturday shifts

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Two (2) years of experience working in a library.
  • Knowledge of library practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge about, and interest in, reading and literature.
  • Bilingual capabilities.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:
Computer and computer software, including Microsoft Office Suite, Library information databases, and integrated library system software; copy/fax/print/scanner machines; Microfilm/fiche reader; Mobile devices; and other standard office equipment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, talk, and hear; Use hands to finger, handle, or operate objects, tools, or controls; and Reach with hands and arms; The employee is routinely required to climb and push. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move 25 pounds or more and push heavy book carts. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The work environment is a public setting with many walk-in patrons. The noise level is moderately noisy. The employee is exposed to common germs, paper, book dust, and, occasionally, to mold.
