Position Summary

The LNG Tankerman PIC is responsible for the day-to-day operational support of the LNG tank barge, including the safe storage, transfer, and vaporization of liquefied natural gas (LNG). This role performs cargo transfer operations, routine maintenance, equipment monitoring, and regulatory documentation to ensure safe and compliant vessel operations.

The LNG Tankerman PIC reports to the Lead LNG Tankerman PIC and supports overall barge and bunkering operations, including LNG transfers from truck rack to LNG-propelled vessels.

Essential Functions

  • Promote and uphold the TOTE Services Safety Culture, ensuring compliance with all safety policies and procedures while onboard or representing the company.
  • Serve as Person-in-Charge (PIC) during LNG cargo transfer operations as assigned.
  • Safely and efficiently transfer LNG between barges, vessels, trucks, and facilities.
  • Complete and maintain required documentation, including barge logs, bills of lading, gauge reports, and daily reports.
  • Conduct LNG tank barge loading and discharge operations.
  • Monitor cargo pressures, temperatures, and tank conditions to maintain safe operating parameters.
  • Operate diesel engines, cargo pumps, compressors, electric motors, chiller systems, reliquification equipment, nitrogen generators, thermal oxidizers, and cryogenic valves.
  • Perform routine maintenance, inspection, troubleshooting, and minor repairs of LNG tank barge equipment, including generators, pumps, motors, air compressors, and related systems.
  • Support general vessel maintenance activities and maintain onboard inventory of spare parts and consumables.
  • Create service requests and procure items through the company portal as required.
  • Handle barge lines, winches, anchors, and assist with mooring and assist tug operations.
  • Act as lookout during transit and mooring operations when assigned.
  • Inspect vessel systems to ensure compliance with Coast Guard, state, and company regulations.
  • Participate in required drills, training exercises, and operational turnovers.
  • Communicate professionally with vessel crews, facility personnel, lay berth staff, and management.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Lead LNG Tankerman PIC.

Knowledge Requirements

  • LNG systems and bunkering operations
  • Tug and barge operations
  • Marine machinery and vessel systems
  • Regulatory and class requirements applicable to LNG tank barges
  • Cargo loading software and IAS systems
  • Ability to read and interpret P&ID drawings
  • Basic automation and electrical troubleshooting principles
  • Basic arithmetic skills and metric system calculations for cargo transfer operations
  • Command of the English language sufficient for clear oral and written communication

Skills & Abilities

  • Working knowledge of LNG liquefaction, storage, shipping, vaporization, or related operations
  • Ability to safely conduct cargo transfer operations with minimal supervision
  • Proficiency in completing required documentation accurately and timely
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Basic computer proficiency (Microsoft Office and operational software systems)
  • Ability to conduct effective shift turnovers and equipment status updates

Minimum Requirements

  • Valid U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC)
  • Tankerman PIC DL or Tankerman PIC (Barge) DL required
    • Tankerman PIC LG or Tankerman PIC (Barge) LG highly preferred
  • Valid National and STCW Medical Certificate
  • Current TWIC
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in tank barge, tanker, or related maritime operations

Working Conditions

Work is performed in marine environments, including interior and exterior vessel spaces, with exposure to varying temperatures, weather conditions, and noise levels. Limited administrative work may occur in an office environment.

The position may require extended work hours, including nights, weekends, holidays, and rotating schedules. Travel may be required. Regular and predictable attendance is essential.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to access vessels, climb ladders and stairs, bend, stoop, and reach overhead
  • Ability to lift and carry at least 50 pounds
  • Ability to safely maneuver cargo hoses, barge lines, and related equipment
  • Ability to perform duties in dynamic and potentially hazardous marine environments
