POSITION OVERVIEW
The SMT Group Leader is responsible for overseeing and supporting the Surface Mount Technology (SMT) production team to ensure compliance with operating standards, product quality, safety, and on-time delivery. This role requires strong leadership, organizational skills, and hands-on technical knowledge of SMT operations, tools, and processes.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide leadership, direction, and task assignments to team members, ensuring compliance with production standards.
- Monitor team performance, maintain records, and encourage collaboration while recognizing contributions.
- Ensure quality of finished products by checking workmanship and adherence to specifications.
- Maintain a safe work environment by enforcing protective equipment usage, ESD protocols, and safety procedures.
- Manage material availability by reviewing MOS, verifying inventory, and ensuring operating supplies (solder paste, stencil wipers, solvents) are stocked.
- Oversee SMT inventory restocking, labeling, and FIFO/Kanban systems.
- Ensure secondary tooling and materials are stored properly and resources are conserved.
- Act as liaison between management and team members; lead meetings and support healthy communication.
- Train team members on SMT equipment and processes, including:
- Turning on machines, computers, and ventilation systems.
- Using Smartsheet for scheduling, Qantel for inventory, and JUKI software for program loading.
- Proper loading/unloading of JUKI trolleys and feeder handling.
- Stencil printer setup, AOI equipment use, oven recipes, and stencil cleaning.
- Performing First Article verification, handling material deviations, and troubleshooting equipment.
- Participate in CIT meetings, support cross-training in manufacturing, and ensure shift-to-shift communication.
- Support other areas of manufacturing as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS
- Basic knowledge of electronic components and ESD principles.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Windows and ability to use ERP/MRP systems (Qantel experience a plus).
- Strong organizational, leadership, and interpersonal skills with the ability to motivate teams.
- Attention to detail and ability to follow/interpret process sheets, work instructions, and technical documentation.
- Ability to operate SMT equipment, semiautomatic machines, and perform troubleshooting.
- Strong hand-eye coordination and mechanical aptitude.
- Adaptable, flexible, and capable of working cross-functionally in a team environment.
EDUCATION
- High school diploma or GED required.
