PURPOSE/SUMMARY:
The VDC Structural Steel Detailer II position is suited for technologically minded and detail-oriented individuals who have an interest in construction design and engineering principles. As a VDC Structural Steel Detailer II, you will be responsible for producing detailed fabrication models and drawings for structural steel components used in various construction projects. The VDC Structural Steel Detailer II will work closely with our senior structural steel detailing staff, our engineering and fabrication teams to ensure that all steel components are designed and fabricated to exact specifications. The ideal candidate will be technologically minded, able to use geometry and math, have knowledge of CAD software and want to learn all about the structural steel drafting industry.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Steel Detailing and Documentation:
- Interpret contract documents, IFCs, and engineering drawings to create detailed steel models and drawings for fabrication and construction.
- Address design and fabrication concerns, ensuring that models reflect accurate material sizes, connections, and erection processes.
- Prepare Bill of Materials (BOMs) and other necessary documentation to ensure smooth fabrication and erection processes.
- Model Management:
- Develop and manage 3D models using software such as AutoCAD, Advance Steel, Revit, and Navisworks, ensuring that models meet project standards and are free from clashes.
- Ensure all project files are organized according to company standards and are compatible with the established workflows.
- Assist in maintaining the steel connection database to align with engineering documents and fabrication standards.
- Software Proficiency:
- Utilize advanced features of detailing software, including AutoCAD, Advance Steel, and Navisworks, to develop and modify models.
- Ensure model optimization for production, including custom connections and file export for fabrication.
- Quality Assurance:
- Collaborate with the Quality Control (QC) team to ensure all 2D and 3D deliverables meet project and company quality standards.
- Conduct self-reviews to identify and resolve potential issues before submission to the fabrication team or client.
- Fabrication and Installation Knowledge:
- Ensure steel models and documentation comply with shop fabrication and field installation standards, addressing practical concerns such as material handling and erection limitations.
- Work in collaboration with the fabrication team to streamline the production process, considering fabrication and shipping constraints.
- Produce fabrication packages including shop drawings, erection drawings, .DXF’s, .NC files and 3D BIM coordination files, shop cut lists, and Advance Bill of Materials for all types of structural and miscellaneous steel projects.
- Industry Standards and Codes:
- Develop and maintain an intermediate understanding of relevant building codes (IBC, UFC, CBC) and AISC Steel Detailing Standards.
- Ensure all deliverables meet industry standards and reflect engineering best practices.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree with at least 4 years of related work experience or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, showing increasing responsibility for BIM project components.
- Expertise in BIM tools and applications related to cost, scheduling, estimating, design, and coordination.
- Proven written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present technical material effectively.
- Demonstrated leadership, interpersonal skills, and proficiency with BIM computer applications such as Navisworks.
- Experience in conducting skill assessments, providing training, and managing performance reviews.
